I use box/corner filters a lot. They're great for temp tanks, easy to seed or add special media to, like coral, and they do fine for smaller tanks. They also don't eat fry.
I decided I wanted a few that were bigger than mine though, as I'm keeping them in more tanks now for the coral & they double as supplement filtration in corners opposite of the HOB filters. When I saw Lee's Triple Flow Filters in a medium size, I grabbed three.
I couldn't be happier with them - very efficient. Much better than the others I was using and I thought those were fine. I'm just using a small pump so that's not it. These things suck through so much water that when I put one in right after a water change, it picked up so many floating particles that I had to change the top floss layer again! There's so much Java Moss that a lot of stuff gets stirred up when I change the water.
Just as good, if not better, than my HOB filters, and you can move these around too. They're also reasonably quiet. My other ones had the tube going in and made big 'glug glug' sounds, especially in the smaller tanks. The new ones use an airstone so its much quieter.
Here's the best part - they're CHEAP! You can get box filters for $4-$10, depending on the size. Not only that, but the floss is cheap too - you can get big bags of quilt batting at a department store for $4 and it lasts for eons. Great to have around for a spare filter / back-up.
To give you some scale, I'm using a medium one in a 20G-long and its doing an excellent job as the only filtration. The fish love playing in the bubbles too  .
I'm impressed. Paul tells me that he gets them in at Pacific Aquatics (http://www.pacificaquatics.ca/), although he's out right now. If you want to try them, give him a shout and I'm sure he can have them in directly:smile: . I'm trying the large ones as soon as I can get them.
