So Aphyosemion females lay one egg, and the male then fertilizes it. The process goes on all day, and most of the Aphyos I keep give me 5 to 10 eggs a day during a breeding period, if I feed them well. Today, I took out 48 hours of eggs from my primigenium 10 gallon. I have one male and four females, the results of a summertime egg purchase. The last time I had checked, mid-week last week, I got a good 10 eggs, all fertile and now eyeing up. Yesterday, I got a nice round number: 40.
Holy moley. The male looks robust and colourful as can be, but the energy expenditure on reproduction must be amazing. The eggs looked good, and it'll be interesting to see if they are. I wonder if he was actually able to fertilize that many...
We shall see.

Busy male keeping up with all that egg production. 40 eggs?... a population explosion in the making if he could keep up. Keep us posted as to how many do hatch.

Way to go Gary?????
It's Senor primigenium that has me impressed. If I had a few males, I'd expect 40 eggs from that many females, but one male? All possible sleazy jokes aside, that is a remarkable marathon for a fish. I just checked the eggs, and 39 show early development and one is questionable. I guess everyone has to be good at something in life.

So, 40 eggs on the 14th, and 37 babies hatched as of march 30. Not bad. I may have some pretty killies to share by the early autumn.
The earlier group of 10 eggs only gave 3 fry. I don't know why.
This fish seems to like round numbers, as I've started with 40 fry in total.
