So Aphyosemion females lay one egg, and the male then fertilizes it. The process goes on all day, and most of the Aphyos I keep give me 5 to 10 eggs a day during a breeding period, if I feed them well. Today, I took out 48 hours of eggs from my primigenium 10 gallon. I have one male and four females, the results of a summertime egg purchase. The last time I had checked, mid-week last week, I got a good 10 eggs, all fertile and now eyeing up. Yesterday, I got a nice round number: 40.
Holy moley. The male looks robust and colourful as can be, but the energy expenditure on reproduction must be amazing. The eggs looked good, and it'll be interesting to see if they are. I wonder if he was actually able to fertilize that many...
