View Full Version : Little eyes peering out at me!!!!!

It's a real good thing that I'm into fish, because I just came back from the Meat Loaf concert here in Victoria and I'm deaf as a doornail.. but OMG IT WAS WORTH IT... anyway.. back to the fish.. sorry, am excited.

So, I didn't want to write anything else until I could actually manage something a little more upbeat than my last few posts. We're not out of the woods yet as everyone is still recovering. And Mel,,,, you're NOT going to believe this...

I haven't been concentrating AS MUCH on the gravid spots the past week or so because I'm afraid of getting my hopes up and losing my lyretail gals. I finally took a real good look tonight and it would appear that the little orange "egg like things" I was telling you about have little black dots. Yup.. there are little eyes peering out at me. That's the female that's in the hospital tank and she has nothing to hide behind (bare tank because of meds). So I can get a pretty clear look. Can't get close enough to my gal in the planted tank though. I think I mentioned a day or two ago that she's larger than this female though. IF they manage to drop the fry, do you think they have a chance to be normal with all of the meds in the water??? I'm still not concentrating on the fry but more on getting the females better first so don't want to stop the meds even if they do come. Once I can see the eyes, do you have any idea at that point APPROX how far they are along? I know it would be an approx. Guess I have to find a new name for "deadbeat" now. Seems he's not such a deadbeat afterall...LOL

Well that's the thing - none of mine go like that. All colors have a solid dark spot from small to large. I don't see eyes or eggs or anything like that. So I can't tell you how long or even if that's what it is.

As for copper, it builds up in the system, which would take a shorter time for tiny fry. I'd get them out of the tank as soon as possible. You may see some sterility, but otherwise I don't know if it would effect unborn fry or not.

I think copper should be taken off the market, personally. There's alternatives and its nasty stuff.

I looked for RidIch Plus but no one carried it. Is there something else to replace the copper stuff with? It seems to be working really well at this point. Should I change it?

i have a platy that is Huge, squared off - been this way for 2 weeks. I can see orange with eyes and have been able to for at least 2.5 weeks. if she hasn't delivered yet i'll be surprised. I get to go home to day to see everyone but my mom has been updating me.

I would see the treatment through if its working - stopping med's halfway through and starting new ones will just extend the time of treatement.

I think I need to stare at my fish more - I've never once noticed eyes  .

Hey, if you don't stare at your fish enough to notice eyes.. take my word for it Mel, DON"T START NOW!!!!! It just means that you have a life...LOL

I just got a call from Kritters 'n' Fins, they ordered Lyres in for me about a month and a half ago and they just got some in... I'm on my way.. shall I take my camera??? LOL

Melody

LOL I have probably noticed it but didn't take note of it, if you get my drift.

And she said she can't get Lyres there - Have fun and remember one word...

QUARANTINE!!!!!

p.s. - If you see colors other than red, let me know and I'll try to talk them into shipping....lol. What is it about red & orange lyres? That's all you ever see it seems. The only place I knew of with any variety is constantly sold out. :(

I swear, I couldn't find them. And these guys told me they weren't going to order any because they don't sell. I'm so happy though, and they are soooo getting quarentined!!!! I'm a little disappointed that one of them is already pregnant. But I don't care, i'm so happy. yeah.

i went home to a less preggers platy and for the life of me could not find a single baby - all the fish in there are too small to eat the fry....i think or they're hiding in the gravel

That'd rock Shell, thanks! I can always send you a heatpack too. Maybe there will be some creatures you'll want here and I can return the fave. Anything but plain red or orange would make me happy. Even if they're those colors with black on them it would be a nice change, as long as they're female. They're probably here reasonably often, but I don't drive so my touring doesn't include many stores. The one in walking distance apparently has no use for Livebearers whatsoever...lol...they had a big two species, regular Mollies and mutt Guppy/Endlers. I respect their right to focus on something different, but I reserve my right to complain about it.

Is the filter uptake covered?

With your plants, I'm sure they're just hiding!

EEEEKKK - no filter uptake isn't covered but the filter is too small for the tank so i figured it wouldn't be strong enough!
AWE... now i feel horrible - they were probably sucked up :(

Look inside the filter! More t han once I have rescued babies from there. Its amazing they c an survive. Last week I had baby sailfin mollys go THRU my skimmer.. and end up in the bubble trap. I have no idea how they lived!

I will take a walk down there tomorrow Mel and shoot you a PM when I get back... IF ITS NOT SNOWING! It will be after 2pm tho as thats the earliest I could sneak away from work.

Thanks Shell - no worries if you'd rather be in a warm, dry home....lol.

Ms. Fishykisses, chances are they all wouldn't be sucked up, but as Shelley advised, it can't hurt to check the filter. You can also try sprinkling some food in - that usually brings them to the surface, especially if there's floating plants. Good luck!

Hey gals,
I'm so sorry, I didn't see the second page on this thread. They were all red/orange. They ordered 12 in total. There were three full lyre males and the rest were females. All light orange.

Ms. Fishykisses, don't panic, I often go for days without seeing the platy fry. (especially if they happen to be spotted ones... they tend to be grey at first and are almost invisible in the gravel.
