The Catch of the Day
What you can catch from your fish!

Anyone who keeps, or even eats, aquatic creatures, should be aware that there are diseases & parasites that you can catch from them. Always see your Doctor if you suspect you are infected.

Both of the following can infect through cuts or abbrasions.

Mycobacteriosis/Nocardiosis (Fish TB)

Symptoms in fish: There are many symptoms that can be present in fish, including red patches, skin nodules and weight loss, along with symptoms that are often diagnosed as diseases by themselves, such as Pop-eye & finrot. There may no external signs at all. Since there are several species of the bacteria, they can have varying symptoms.

Symptoms in humans: It usually takes three or four weeks for a human to show symptoms, which will begin with swelling in boney areas, such as fingers, elbows, knees or feet. This will progress to an absess/cyst which may rupture and scar you. Lymph Nodes may swell. Treatment includes a long round of antibiotics.

Erysipelothrix Rhusiopathiae

Another, less heard about bacteria is Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (Crayfish Handlers' Disease). It is a pathogenic micro-organism which can infect species of the Vibrio genus.

Symptoms in Vibro: None. It doesn't cause a disease but the creatures can carry colonies of the organism.

Symptoms in humans: Vary according to strain you are exposed to. Symptoms may occur in the hands and include burning & itching which leads to joint inflammation that is very painful. Lymph Nodes may (rarely) swell. It will run its course in about three weeks, but you may have a relapse. There is also a septicemic form which is associated with the heart disease endocarditis. Tissue or blood samples may be required for positive diagnosis. Treatment is usually Ampicillin or Penicillin Antibiotics.

Prevention:

!:tropicalfish:! Wash your hands well with antibacterial soap or regular soap, in very hot water.

!:tropicalfish:! If you experience symptoms of these conditions, or if any other odd symptoms send you to the Doctor, remember to tell him/her that you keep fish.
