View Full Version : What's trendy in your area?

After Sarah asked about Cichlids, I got to thinking about how trendy this hobby can be. Alberta is totally into Cichlids, this area of BC is getting more into Livebearers and wild-caught anything, Ontario is into everything it seems....lol....I consider Ontario to be the fish-keeping capital of Canada. However, not long ago Shrimp couldn't be found in Ontario but they were all over the place here in BC.

Enthusiasm spreads. I got excited about snails (which is kinda sad...lol) and I started talking about them, posting pic's, etc. Soon almost everyone I knew had snails, when they hadn't even heard of a pink snail two years ago. Yet two years ago in the States, the market was already getting saturated across the Country.

It happens in forums, in Clubs... its actually a very trendy hobby when you think of it. A lot depends on availability of course, and new creatures on the market, but I think a lot of it is a caught bug too. Someone posts a pic and suddenly we all want one.

What's trendy where you hang out? Killifish? Ponds? Crayfish? Creatures whose name I can't pronounce? Have you ever caught a bug from someone else based on their enthusiasm or a club presentation, etc?

My addictions that were fed by someone else include snails, shrimp & BN plecos.

Agreed... I think they're picking up in popularity everywhere too. Probably have the Internet to thank for that - knowing lots of people who have done it and having information at your fingertips makes it far less intimidating.

Alberta is totally into Cichlids

Most of Alberta is into Cichlids, but not all of us.
At the rate my livebearers are reproducing, I will soon have enough to flood the entire Calgary market.

Ok, maybe not the entire market, but at least something different than the usual.

LOL They'll catch on. There are still many people who appreciate a fish who won't attack everything else in the tank.

A proposed t-shirt design for for the ALA convention this year was a big Halfbeak eating a Cichlid....lol.....I don't know if that will be the one they use or not.

I agree with Fishy... sw tanks especially nanos seem to be popping up everywhere.

Bichirs seem to be quite trendy, though they are not for everyone.

Rare livebearers.

And now vivariums seem to be a growing trend with dart frogs, or at least I noticed alot more around and it's making me want to get one!

pretty much a little bit of everything here.

The ranking of popularity goes like this

1st-neon tetras, people go crazy over them, kids buy them for bowls, which is sad
2st-african cichlids (mostly malawian)
3nd-SA and CA cichlids (convicts are really popular, oscars are probably the most popular though, and who can forget angelfish)
4rd-livebearers (mollies aren't so popular but guppies and platies are)
5th-dojo loaches

those are probably the five most popular things from what i have seen. They get sold out EXTREMELY fast when the LFS gets a shipment in

I notice alot of MONSTER/KILLER fish in Burnaby and I in Vancouver but not at the moment.

But i dont think people should have a fish cuz its popular.. i hate that.. i always want the oddballs, i guess cuz there more like me. ;)

i think i have one of the only few crayfish in BC.. :spinny:

Interesting stuff!

Crayfish are big in Ontario, yes? I don't hear about them much here yet.

I forget about Nanos when I think of marine tanks - definitly a trend there!

Shrimp! I've been planning to buy cherry shrimp for ages, but none of my favorite stores ever seem to have them in when I'm there... they always sell out a day or two before.
And SW... the all-in-one nano kits are making that easier for many beginners. People are really jumping on the bandwagon for mantis shrimp and octopi in this area, as well.

Post a WTB for Cherry Shrimp - have them sent to your door :D .

I would like to try marine for the snails alone....lol...some other wild looking creature would tempt me eventually though, I'm sure.

I agree that on most of the forums I am on nano is big. Not just salt water, but nano freshwater planted is gaining popularity too. For about 30 seconds galaxy rasboras were the rage, but with their status in the wild I don't see that trend continuing.

Personally I am into livebearers of all kinds. Thanks to Melody I have caught the wild type bug and as such can't own enough of them.
