I came home today to find that my Green Texas beaten up and looking pretty bad. This is the first fight I've had in my aquarium in 1 year. The Texas lost most of his tail and left fin and is now still breathing but struggling to swim in the hospital tank. I've got a tough decision to make: should I euthanize him or let him struggle and hope he gets better?

Fighting cichlids like that are often masters of recovery. They can be demolished, and yet rally back - I think it goes with the lifestyle.
Once the fish has taken a beating though, the old tank becomes unsafe. It will happen again. Big cichlids create problems of that sort...

i have this female red zebra. she was holding before i left on a trip...i had separated her into a floating guppy breeder...and while i was gone...she had jumped out and into the general population. the male red zebra tore her apart. this is what she looked like when i got back.

it was soo sad to see her like that....but she still had her appetite and i took that as a good sign. i kept her in there for a month...i used this diy melafix...and she looks fine now. fins have grown back fine. next time she starts holding, i'll be ready. i guess you just have to gauge where you think your green texas is at. if you think he/she won't make it...maybe go for it. i don't have the balls to do something like that. but if there's a glimmer of hope...i say go for it....i think cichlids are fighters. gl!!!...post some pictures. hope your GT pulls through...im rooting for him!

one of my blue zebra cichlids had its tail bitten off so I moved if from my African tank into my 80 gallon pond tank (fish from the pond moved inside for the winter).
It is in with goldfish, comets (5"), and koi (3" to 11") .
It's tail did not grow back but it is right in there fighting for food and has grown from 2 1/2" to 4".
It is the blue one just above the pipe tube in this photo taken before loosing it's tail
