View Full Version : New angels in the tank

I have a 72 gallon bow front tank, I have a blue angel female and a silver pearl skin red eye male which appeared to be paired up. She layed eggs on the sterilizer case and he helped with the fanning, but by the next day the eggs were gone. I have done some research on spawning and apparently this is not unusual. I have a friend that has a 90 gallon tank with a few pairs and thought it would be nice to have another pair in the tank. I bought a pair from a lady I know , when I put them in the tank every thing seemed ok . Then I noticed the original blue female was showing some aggression towards the 2 new angels which are a little bigger than her. Her mate is kind of passive about it all but tries to swim between her and the news guys. There is no heavy aggressive lip locking, just a bit of chasing and flaring by the blue female. Is this just posturing to show boundaries in the tank? Is 72 gallon is enough room for 4 angels? Other fish in the tank include 8 dwarf white parrots, 2 kribs and the rest are the bootom cleanup crew 3 cories, 4 clown loaches, and 3 plecoes. Filtering is an eheim pro3 2075 canister, aquaclear 70 with purigen, a sponge filter and a uv sterilizer, so I think that part is good. If there is any angel fish people that could comment that would be great as I am a novice with angels. Cheers Laurie

I think it all depends on the angels. I had 2 in a 46bow, I added 4, one died immediately guess it wasn't as healthy as the others, but in the beginning, the original 2 were chasing and showing aggression probably for a few weeks, but now the remaining 2 are OK and everyone for the most part seems to get along, I don't see chasing or anything anymore.

How are things going with the 2 pair of angels doing now that they've had time to settle in? Have they resolved their issues? Have you had any luck with either pair spawning since you added the new ones?
BTW, I hope you don't mind, I realized your thread was in the general section so thought maybe you might get more input if I moved it here to the Cichlid section.

IME,angels can get pretty aggressive towards each other, even if they are not both pairs. my mom had 2 in a 60 that murdered each other. im pretty sure the "dwarf white parrot cichlids" are short bodied(ballon) albino convicts, which if they are,may cause problems with the angels. that tank is also too small for 4 clown loaches, they reach a foot long and for a proper school/shoal yiou need a 120. the corys should be in groups of at least 4,preferably 6. and what species are the ploecos? commons can reach 2 feet

That sounds like territorial behaviour to me. You probably have a pair that are defending their space from the new comers. Keep an eye on it though, it can get seriously aggressive. I had a female reject a male -- took less than a second for her to blind him in one eye and tear his anal fin beyond repair. She got a new tank, and he now polices the juvies tank. Is the tank planted? Usually if you put something in the tank to block line of sight, it helps reduce the aggression. Vals or even bamboo work well.
