Bred by: Gerard Siew
Variety : Calico Veiltail
Parents source : UK (Derek Mills): Derek Mills x Ron King
Spawned in Montreal : May 14, 2011
Generation : F1
Number of eggs: Many
Goal: Secure the population of British calico veiltails in Canada and develop a metallic veiltail line. Metallic gene pool : Male phillies and unsexed UK veiltail.

May 16, 2011: A good percentage of eggs have been fertilized.
May 17, 2011: Eggs hatching and fry resting this evening; incubation time of 3.5 to 4 days normal at 72F.
May 18, 2011: Some eggs still hatching but almost finished.
May 20, 2011: Some fry are free swimming; light feeding of BBS started.
May 22, 2011: Weak fry, crooked spine, fry still not free swimming are being culled.
May 26, 2011: Number of fry about 500-600 looking good, weaker fry died on their own, one single tail culled.
May 28, 2011: Fry eating well, culling should start soon.
June 08, 2011: Dorsal fin visible, still feeding BBS; sinking pellet food still untouched.
June 09, 2011: Although parents are calicos, many fry will be metallics. They'll be used for one of my goals i.e. to breed my metallic UK/Philly veils of which I have only males.
June 11, 2011: Fry start nipping on sinking pellet food. That's good, this way they can eat all day long.
June 20, 2011: Alot of fry have chin bubbles and have been culled.
June 21, 2011: Still some fry with chin bubbles; I'm quite disappointed. In fact, I should cull all the fry because of bad genetics, but there are only 3 UK calico veitails in Canada. I'll have to get another spawn.
August 21, 2011: Keeping 13 fish, 3 metallics for my metallic line and 10 calicos.

May 3, 2012: Collected some eggs on a mop; could be pure calicos or cross calico x UK Moor
May 7, 2012: Eggs hatched today; about 50 fry group A
May 7, 2012: New pure calico veils spawn; male has low milt, Group B
May 9, 2012: Fry group A free-swimming, feeding FBBS
May 9, 2012: Group B about 50% fertlization rate, more than expected from low milt

The fry are so cute. They look like healthy little fish. They're growing quickly.

Any Calico Telescopes?

Calico dragoneyes (telescopes) are more common but I like the butterflytail form or the veiltail form which are harder to find in high quality. I already have too many goldfish varieties at the moment but, of course tempations are always there.
