I think the most common thing I heard when the USDA decided to crack down on illegal snails, was things like "They're not going to bother with the hobbyists who only own a few snails." and the like.

I hear this all the time about a lot of things actually. It sounds logical enough. After all, its expensive to put out that kind of manpower for every little 'offender', right?

Maybe so, but that doesn't always stop them.

Here's a couple of threads from Applesnail.net to give you an idea of just how serious they can be when they crack down on something. These are hobbyists like you and I, just a couple of snails...

PLEASE never think you're not going to get caught because they won't bother. This example may be US based, but that doesn't mean it won't happen here too, and it does. They like to make examples of people.

Nope, or you wouldn't catch me with them....lol....I do get approached on a regular basis to ship them to the States though. No way, no how! Its more an overall example in case you are tempted to pull off something illegal and think you won't get caught, like cross-border shipping, wild release, or unrelated crime.

Our climate doesn't support invasive tropical snails, and we don't have the crop concerns that the US and other Countries have. I tested my plant eating snails here in BC because I thought with our warmer Winters they may have a chance, but nothing survived. I wanted to make sure because some people buy snails for ponds and I wanted to discourage that if they would pose a threat.
