Humans have determinedly underestimated the abilities of other life forms since forever. I read somewhere that it's partly to do with not wanting to relate to you food, or some such.
But science is finally taking notice. It has nothing to do with fish, but here's (http://blogs.nature.com/news/2011/07/dont_call_me_polly_parrots_hav.html?utm_source=fee dburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+news/rss/the_great_beyond+%28Nature+News+Blog+-+Blog+Posts%29&utm_content=Google+Reader) a piece on the use of individual names by wild parrots.

don't get me started on crows - I'm utterly smitten by them. Unfortunately, people hate them - they're one of the most underrated and despised life forms around. I've been giving katkibble to the ones on my walking/busing routes for a few years, and have learned so much about them as a result. Now, after nesting season every year, they bring the kids down for introductions:-)

The bird in the photo is one of a pair who's turf includes the gas station near my apartment.

That one looks as if he's saying, "Excuse me, don't you have anything better to do than disturb me, you lowly human."

actually, I think s/he was thinking "why you being so cheap with the kibble, you lowly human." After all, it was me being stared at while trying to take pictures of flowers:-)
