View Full Version : Sexing Bronze Cory's

This should not be rocket science, but with only two Longfin Bronze Cory's, I'm not sure. I don't see a huge difference in size, but one has much longer fins and a lot more bronze color. Does that give anyone a hint?

I don't think they're going to be as large as regular Bronze Cory's, or maybe they're both males. There's two Albino Cory's in with them and I'm reasonable sure they're females. The one with the longer finnage seems to pester them in a manner that could indicate an interest in spawning, but one never knows.

They have very little to do with each other - one is almost a loner, not playing with any of the others. That's the shorter finned one. Its hard to get a pic of them together because they rarely hang out. I'll post some pics later.

If anyone has any guesses, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

color has nothing to do with sexual dimorphism in aeneus (bronze) corys.. there are a few things to look for when sexing corys.. one is to look at them from above, and if they are in good condition the female will be wider behind the pectoral fins.. another way is to look at the ventral fins.. females will have more of a rounded fin, for cupping eggs in spawning.. and males will have more pointy ventral fins.

I will see if I can snap some pics this weekend to show you the difference. I have a pair of rabauit/zygatus corys, not sure what they are until I get fry, that you can clearly see the difference in sexes. they are the perfect candidate for a cory sexing seminar.. lol

I usually go by size/width when I'm selecting from a tank of them, but these ones just don't seem to have much of a difference between the two, making it harder to sex them. I'll see if I can tell from the fins then, thanks.

As for the seminar, great idea - might as well make it a quick article so it doesn't get lost in the regular posts. :D

Now that I look at pictures, one is definitly larger than the other. All of that flashing finnage is confusing.:twitcy:

Cory #1 (Larger):

Cory #2 (Color difference isn't THAT profound, he's just in a darker part of the tank):

Both (Cory #1 is closest to us):

any chance you can get a pic of the larger one without it's ventral fins clamped. the pic of cory number two is perfect. also, any way you can take a pic from above?

I took a bazillion pictures and this is the best one that turned out.. can you guess which is the male and which is the female??? the male is the little guy on the top and the female is the egg heavy one on the bottom.

I will snap another billion pics tomorrow to see if I can get some showing the ventral fins

BOY do I hear ya....lol....I did one round of pic's but its been a busy couple of days. Here's two crappy ones.

This one shows the larger one from behind, whom I'm leaning more & more towards as the female (today...lol). Cory 2 is sideways.

This is the best I could do so far for a side shot of Cory #1:

No luck whatsoever in shots from above yet. I did get a good one actually, but couldn't figure out which Cory it was  .

Thanks for the time & effort that you're putting into this. Hopefully we'll get a good reference for others out of the deal.

Both look male to me

Melody

That could be. The reason I'm thinking they are a different sex is there is a size/shape difference and they're siblings so that shouldn't be the case, but it can happen of course. Thanks for adding your thoughts - it would be nice to know what I'm dealing with either way. I should also mention that they're not in breeding condition yet, so I may have to wait a bit to sex them with any certainty. They're just coming of age now.

I have two female (?) Albino C. aeneus in with them and it wouldn't break my heart if they crossed, so that's an option if they're both male. I'll probably do that anyway, although I wouldn't see albinos until generation two, and they would also have to be longfin or I'll be backcrossing for a generation or two again after that. It will keep me busy & out of trouble for a time...lol.

I haven't found them since, but they're around here. I bought mine privately through a friend who had a friend...lol....and I don't know if he's spawned more or not. I'll be happy to give you the heads-up if I find more though.

Yes, they come in all of the forms - Pepper, Albino & Bronze. All the same species.

Pepper, albino and bronze are not all the same species... peppers are Corydoras paleatus and bronze are Corydoras aeneus.. and to make things even more confusing.. both come in albino forms.

That is exactly why I lumped them together - the stupid Albinos....lol...thanks for the correction! Sad part is, I know better....lol.

You may want to consider joining the VAHC (http://www.fishopolis.com/vahc/) to find them & other cool fishies. They're often at the auctions and there's a Members' Only Auction coming up on April 4th! :D

I'll be sure to post when I find them being sold again, or if I ever manage to spawn the little piglets. They sure enjoy their conditioning food, but that's about it so far.

Cory #2 is definitly male - he's attempting to spawn with an Albino as we speak. Somebody forgot to tell him she won't be in the mood until morning I guess...lol....but that's definitly what he's up to. I'll have to watch to see if Cory #1 will also try to charm her.

Pretty pretty cories.

Would there be a chance of finding some mixed in with reg. cories?

Melody

Maybe so. But you don't have to wait for that. A little birdy tells me that Mr. Mykiss may bring some in, and he ships ::D: . In fact, if you send him a PM I'm sure he'd be happy to let you know when he has them and reserve some for you.
