My 29g is in need of greater filtration. Right now it is running with a Whisper EX30 that came with the tank kit. I am wondering about using a Whisper EX 45 or AC 50? Any experience with either of these on a 29g. Do I need to worry about too much water current? Any other suggestions would be appreciated also.

I had every size of aqua clear at one time and I think I probably ran the 50 on my 23 gallon tank, the only issue I had with them was picking up sand(this may happen to all) and running the impeller. I always took out the carbon and put in two sponges instead for extra filtration.
Another issue maybe just here as we are famous for power outages (never set any digital appliances clocks anymore) was some of them would not start back up.

That is my concern also. My daughter has my old AC 20 on the 10g and it sometimes would run dry after an outage. That is why I like the Whisper, it starts so easily without any priming, but it does not have the option of adding the extra sponges.

To me, there are a couple of issues. I run an aquaclear meant for a 40 gallon on a 20 - and the water moves. The fish love it, but they come from high flow water. A quick current makes them behave more naturally.
So what fish do you have? A current will slaughter bettas or big gouramis, while it'll make swordtails party.
You can't have fine sand.
And you have to look at what plants you have. Filter current flow in fake ways. They hit the glass and swirl, while river currents run in straight lines. Not all plants can take the swirling water.
I can't comment on the whispers though - I haven't used them. I can make my own media for an aquaclear or a marineland, so I go that way. If I have to buy cartridges for a filter, I'm not interested.

This is my barb tank which has pearl danios, barbs (odessa and glass rosy), one otto and one clown pleco.
The plants are amazon sword, Lloydiella (I think) and another that I cannot identify. I am not so good at identifying aquarium plants. I am much better with wildflowers.
I have included a photo of the 3 types. The orange one is plastic so I don't think the current will bother it much.

I don't think you can overfilter that tank unless you put some big thing that gets it swirling like a toilet bowl. Those are all flowing water fish - the otos come from water that would knock us over.
I had to look up the numbers of the aquaclear series as I don't buy filters often. I would consider an aquaclear 50 as too small for a 29 - I wouldn't use less than a 70. I run two 70s on my 75 gallon showtank, and have a 70 on a 20 gallon lampeye tank. My 120 gallon has two old110s on it, and it is borderline for filtration.
I use Aq 50s on 20 gallon tanks if they are lightly stocked.
