Adult size:12" (30 cm), although not usually larger than 9" (23 cm)

Minimum Tank Size: 50 Gallons
Water Parameters (PH/GH/KH): pH 6.2-7.5 (6.9), 3-15 dH (8)
Temperature: 77-84°F (25-29°C)
Special Requirements:This species favors peat filtration.
Use a fine gravel or sand bottom. Include hardy plants, roots, wood, and rocks for hiding places. Excellent filtration is needed as the substrate is stirred up from their constant burrowing.Suitable Tankmates:Catfish (Callichthys, Loricarids, Pimelodids, Doradids), characins (Hatchetfish, Headstanders, large tetras), and other Eartheaters.
Diet: Live/frozen crustaceans,worms, tablets, sinking flake foods.
Sexing:Sexing is hard due to the fish being Isomorphic. Typically the male has a more slender body overall compared to the female.
Breeding and Reproduction: Delayed Mouth-Brooder. The female will lay her eggs on a carefully cleaned rock, the male will then pass over the site and deposit sperm. The female will closely guard the eggs for 3 days, until they hatch, she will harbour the fry in her mouth for the next 3 weeks.
Breeding:Pairs form nuclear families. This cichlid may not spawn with other species are present as the presence of other fish tends to intimidate them.
Notes: S. Juripari and S. Leucosticta look very similar and are often confused with each other. S. Juripari has irredescent stripes on its face and S. Leucosticta has irredescent spangles on the cheeks and body.
