I've observed a few strange things about the wild-types, by comparison to commercial Livebearers. I noticed that the female herem of my P. Velifera male (wild-type Sailfin Molly) always run to him when they're nervous. I figured that was the same reaction as many smaller fish have - grouping when there's a threat.
I fed them last night and noticed something odd though. There was only the one piece of sinking food thrown in the tank, so the competition was frenzied & concentrated. I saw the male Sailfin repeatedly chase off the other fish while his females ate. He didn't chase the females off, just hovered over them chasing the other fish. He would shove his way in if he wanted to eat, but that's it.

I figure this is due to their more direct connection to the wild, but I have no idea if it actually occurs in the wild or not. Anyone else notice wild-types behaving this way? I found it rather endearing, but then again, I like a protective male  .
