I am moving tanks around (again) to make room for the GF to move in. Here is the updated 10G, now home to 50+ red cherry shrimp and numerous ramshorns and MTS:

And heres another shot of some of my new dwarf neon rainbows, still in quarantine in my other 10G:

Moving tanks around again?... you're fish/shrimp/snails will never get bored. I love the updated look of the 10G. And those rainbows sure are pretty fish.

Nice tanks and shrimpy saver! After pulling three dead adult cherries out of an ACmini in one night, I went with some plastic mesh like garlic comes with.

Thanks!

SB, I've never had dead shrimp in my filter. But before I started using the foam pre-filter, I would occaisonally find live shrimp living in the bottom of the Aquaclear underneath the media basket! Now I use Fluval 2 foam filter sleeves to cover the intakes on any tank I expect to have fry, shrimp or snails in.

Are those sleeves in most stores? I've never tried those.

I buy them at King Ed's. This is what you want: http://www.hagen.com/usa/aquatic/product.cfm?CAT=1&SUBCAT=114&PROD_ID=01003310020101. You get two cylindrical foam sleeves for < $5. They fit perfectly over filter intakes and can be rinsed and reused. You might need to zap strap them to secure them on smaller intake tubes. As an added bonus, they provide more surface area for benefical bacteria. Also, my shrimp love hanging out on it to pick at the food that gets stuck there.

The trick is finding something that allows for decent water flow, yet won't suck up the babies. I've tried pretty much everything else and Aquaclear sponges work best because they're designed for waterflow, but they do keep a lot of dirt in the tank too. One of the good things about HOB filters is that dirt is outside the water column.

So I'd like to try these. They don't clog up too quickly? I've used various materials that clogged up so quick, I had to rinse them a couple of times/week... although it is a good indicator for those of us who overfeed :Embarassing: , and it gives the fish a chance to pick it off before it hits the HOB filter.

An elastic works to secure most things I've tried - and its easy!

Thanks!

I rinse them once a week when I do water changes. And because of the pre-filter, I only have to rinse the sponges in the filter once every 3-4 weeks.

I use these too and I swear by them. Best prices I found are @ J&L so I usually pick up a few boxes during Boxing Day sales.

Excellent, thank you! I have to be out & about tomorrow, so maybe I'll get a chance to visit Pacific Aquatics (http://www.pacificaquatics.ca) since they're reasonably close, then order from J&L (http://www.jlaquatics.com) if that doesn't work out.::D:

Here's a lousy shot of the tank as of last week. The val is growing like a weed but it is unfortunately too short to go in my bigger tanks. The sword needs some trimming too...
