Scientific name: Retroculus Xinguensis
Family: Cichlidae
Origin:Brazil.
Adult size:5.5"- 8"
Tank Specs:
Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons or larger with a sandy bottom and flat rocks. Fast flowing water, with lots of surface agitation
Water Parameters (PH/GH/KH): pH 6.0-6.8 (6.9), 3-15 dH (8)
Temperature: 81-84°F (27-29°C)
Special Requirements. Include small stones for perching.Require high levels of dissolved oxygen.Excellent filtration is needed as the substrate is stirred up from their constant burrowing.Suitable Tankmates: Catfish (Callichthys, Loricarids, Pimelodids, Doradids), characins (Hatchetfish, Headstanders, large tetras), and other Eartheaters.
Diet: Live/frozen crustaceans,larvae, tablets, sinking flake foods.
Sexing: Males grow larger than the females
Breeding and Reproduction: The female will lay eggs directly on the sandy substrate, by pressing her underside on the substarate in repeated passes.The male will do the same when fertilizing. The eggs are then moved to a nest constructed of pebbles. The female fans the nest constantly. Once the eggs hatch, (3 days) the fry use the nest for shelter.
