Just to annoy everyone, I'm going to post pictures of all my tanks in this thread.
Some pretty, some not so pretty.
So, I'll start with my fish condo. 14 tanks, 15 gallons each.

Here's the second tank. From the picture at the top of the post, it's the top row, second from the right.
This tank has my Liberty Mollies (Poecilia salvatoris) and my Red Crested Platys.

P. Sphenops, variety 'Liberty'. I posted about that when I was selling them - I can't nail them as Salvatoris or the Sphenops Liberties - I lean towards the latter. Both are wild-types.
Anyways, nice pic's!

Awesome! Methinks that tank is going to expand to another soon!
Methinks you are correct. Kinda funny, about a month ago, the population exploded when 5 or 6 females all dropped fry in one week !
The same thing is starting to happen all across the tank racks, tank populations are starting to explode ! :wideeyed:
Methinks I'll be selling/trading lots of fish in the near future !
Melody
Mar 18th 2007, 01:20 AM
Methinks you'll have no trouble moving them. In fact, I'll probably be after some too. I want to keep a few separate lines for the wild-types to keep the genetics healthy.
Plus I like the domestics you manage to dig up, like this one...

Cool tiger platy! Melody, why don't you have any of those?
Melody
Mar 18th 2007, 05:39 PM
LOL Because I'm picky & Blaine didn't send me any. I've seen them twice in stores but they're muddy - not up to par quite yet. People tried to replicate the strain when it hit the news stands and they haven't put the work into it that the original breeders do.
Tigers have an interesting background. In fact, when featured in a magazine, on the cover no less, it was a premature announcement. The strain wasn't set, which was frowned upon, it was still just a Bleeding Heart throw.
The cool thing is that the guy who created the strain, set or not, got his Bleeding Heart Platy for the cross from the very same breeder that mine are coming from. Its the same breeder who has those incredible Hifin Platy's with the long, thick, draping dorsal that I show off every once in awhile. I don't think he breeds the Tigers himself though.
The best thing about that breeder is he has always bred on a very small scale - very few tanks. Just goes to show what can be accomplished in a small space. One of the most respected fancy Livebearer breeders in the World, and he doesn't even have a fishroom. He's building one now though ::D: . Can't wait to see what he comes up with when he has even more space. Very talented breeder. Hats off to you Darell!

AHA!!!! Here it is! They were on the cover of Tropical Fish Hobbyist mag (http://www.tfhmagazine.com/), June, 2004.
I'm taking all of my issues that have Livebearer articles to the ALA convention to get them signed ::D: , supposing I ever get around to attending one.

Not the most flattering pic of a Platy, but you can see how well defined the stripes are. I'm going to assume from the pic's that we're talking about the same strain, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Mine are similar, the bars on mine aren't quite as well defined, but they are very similar.
I picked up mine locally from a CAS member, she was pretty much looking to get rid of them. So I took all she had ! ( or all that she offered )
I've only got one confirmed male, but it looks like a second one is starting to colour up a bit.
With a little luck, I may be able to get a breeding group going.
Melody
Mar 18th 2007, 07:11 PM
If I can pick up that they're the same strain from the deep, dark recesses of your tanks, your line has potential. I bet it wouldn't take one generation of selective breeding to get more white in there. You could also bring in a white X. Variatus - that was the cross used with the original Bleeding Heart Cross. Bleeding hearts will bring in more red, which you don't want.
I'm going to enjoy watching you develop them - the line is in good hands.

There was a bag of Tiger Platys at the CAS auction this morning. I didn't check them out much.

I don't know about this whole thing Blaine - those females should have been packing storeage, so even if the male was a dud they'd produce fry for months.
Are all of the plants light? Good light in the tank? Further on our discussion about red fry, black fry show up in those conditions from a mile off. Still, you'd think at least a couple would survive.
They're beautiful enough to get by on their looks!

NIce tank and beautiful fish (I'm a sucker for livebearers!) What amazes me is how you find the time to look after all your fish, do water changes, etc. and still find time to aqauscape the tanks!:swoon:
There really is very little maintenance with my tanks  , no really !
The rack that I have been showing so far was aquascaped as each tank was set up, I have only made minor changes since then.
All those tanks are on a common sump, so water changes are pretty easy. I have a hose from my laundry sink to refill with and I choose 2 tanks each week to use the gravel vac on. I still use 5 gal buckets to siphon into, so I know how much water was changed.
Along with a good cleanup crew, the entire fish condo is like looking after 1 single tank.
The big deal is in choosing healthy fish, using quarantine, isolating sick fish or tanks.
All of the tanks on all of my fish tank racks are valved, so at any time I can isolate a tank and put a HOB and heater on it.
My fishroom maintenance takes one morning each week.
Although, don't tell my wife that, she thinks I spend all my free time looking after the fish.
Little does she know, I'm just talking to them and admiring them !

Here we go again. Lucky 13
This tank sits on the bottom row, second from the right.
This tank houses my Ameca Splendens along with one Ghost Shrimp and one male Liberty Molly.
The Ghost Shrimp is a result of a breeding attempt I made a few months ago.
I managed to get one female carrying eggs. She died shortly after and I thought there were no young. I was wrong.
This little guy/gal showed up a few weeks later.
The Amecas ignore the little shrimp, and it seems happy and has grown quite large.
The Liberty Molly has managed to get thru the drain pipe from the tank above three times.
I figure if he's happy there, then he can stay there for now.
Once my Liberty fry get to sexual maturity, I'll set him up with his own harem.

Day 14, last tank on the condo.
This tank is not as pretty as the others. Right now it's being used as a holding tank for livestock thats heading out.
Current residents are Zebra Danios and one male Ameca Splenden.
The tank is on the bottom row, furthest to the right.

Yup, they were born here last summer in my planted tank.
I had a couple of Danios in it to keep the cycle going. Took them out and about a week later, these little guys appeared.

Things have grown in a little.

I just picked up some beautiful Red-eye Red Sailfin Molly females for him to add to his herem from Pacifc Aquatics (http://www.pacificaquatics.ca). They're a neat looking thing. However, we suspect that some might turn out to look like normal Spixi for the most part, which may be why some say Spixies eat plants.
I'll have to try it one of these days of course, because I like crossing stuff :GEEK: , but they'll have to labelled as hybrids with the plant-eating potential 'unknown'. I dubbed them 'Spixa'.
These photos aren't mine so I'll just post the links. Terri, the owner/photographer, owns Rainbowsnails.com in the States. Excellent breeder - one of the originals.

That's why I don't use the 'Giant Columbian Ramshorn' common name. People have negative associations with Ramshorns and they couldn't be more different. They're like other Applesnails, lay for awhile, then take a break. Their clutches are relatively small & they lay their eggs on objects so you can normally spot them for removal if you don't want more (their clutches are larger than Spixi clutches). I think the average Marisa size is around 1.5" across, but they can be larger or smaller. I like their shape - I think that's why they're my fave plant eater.
The good news is that if you do decide to try them, you have Ms. Pamelajo practically in your dooryard - she breeds Marisas.
Surprisingly, Terri reports that the Spixas are actually a bit smaller than a Spixi. I would have thought they'd get bigger because of the Marisa size.
