After all of my impatient waiting... One of the new females that I bought had her fry. She's still fairly small herself, so I don't imagine she had a lot. Not to mention the little buggers are playing a great game of hide and go seek with me. I haven't seen any yet but I have TONS of plants in there to hide them. I thought I caught a glimpse of one which is what sparked me to inspect my females and I discovered one had dropped. I haven't seen him since and it was really quick. I'm a little excited, but i'm more looking forward to the females from my own batch dropping. They're HUGE.

Awesome! I should send you a pic of some of these females. I swore they'd burst two weeks ago and I'm supposed to have an experienced eye...lol....no siree can I get them to drop. I'm adding a heater tonight - I'm sure they have to be six weeks along.

Congrats Kristy! Can't wait to see how many little ones you got. Time for the magnifying glass.
Melody, you don't have heaters in your tanks? I read your reply here and wondered?

Thanks guy/ gals
Melody, if I add a heater will it make a difference??? The temp is hovering around 72 right now.
Still haven't been able to find any fry yet. I hope they didn't get eaten and they Mel, if you can send pics that'd be GREAT!!! I'll take some of these gals too.
Also, I'm going to take the newly dropped mom out of the tank and then it will only be fry/tons of plants and the two moms left in the 15 gal. I've been leaving the lights off as much as possible, but the plants are starting to look a little needy.

If there is one thing that irritates me about forums, its 404'ing and losing what I typed.
So I'll try again, albeit more brief. Ms. Traco1, Swordtails prefer it on the cool side, but my room temp is only about 68-70. Warmth can speed up gestation and fry growth, but I don't like to increase the rate of development too much either. I'll probably warm it up to around 74F.
Ms. Jordonsmom, I'll get some pic's this morning. They're big females so maybe I'm just looking at a huge brood, but when I took those swordtail pic's for the photo section I thought for sure they'd pop then, and they're still going. I'm sure its been way past 4 weeks.

Ok, I'm getting excited again!!! LOL
Ohhh and more exciting news... (I hope). One of the shops here got tired of me harassing him (big surprise  ) and has agreed to order me Koi swords, Hi fin blood swords and Lyretail swords for next week. He PROMISED.. . He's been telling me since I started up again that he'd put in orders for me and hasn't but since i'm in there every few days getting stuff now, he seems to be taking me more seriously. KOI's !!!!! yeahhh...;)

Anyways, good for you!

Ok Kristy, here's one of my perpetually pregnant females - she's looked like this for at least two weeks....lol. Sorry for the fuzzy pics/bad lighting. Its hard to get the camera to pick up on her size, but she's making whales look like models.

We'll do some trading I'm sure. I can't take credit for her - I bought the good genes & paid through the nose for them, but it was worth it for the shortcut alone.
Yours are nice too you know - you'll probably get some real stunners in the fry and you can just keep selecting those for future breeding.

It's been a few years, and I can't quite remember how long it will take to grow them out. If I recall correctly it took like six months, is that about right?? Just to get them to the point where I can start selecting traits that I want.

That's usually how long it takes for mine, although Hifins can take a bit longer.

I saw two orange little fry peek their heads out of the plants today. That's the most i've seen for orange so far.

Well one of the big girls finally spit out some fry this morning - I was beginning to wonder if perhaps a diet plan was in order  . I guess my room temps just get too low for a speedy gestation. Hopefully I'll have at least 4 more pop within the week.
One of my fave Lyres, a neon, is the only Lyre in with my Pastel Albino male. For the longest time she didn't look like she was carrying any fry, to a point that I thought she may turn male on me. Then I noticed she was expecting. I'm hoping the long pause means the Albino male charmed her and I'll get babies from the pairing. Should be pretty if that's the case  .

Don't look now, but by the looks of things you now have more Lyre breeders on the Island than we do over here - you guys will be trading up a storm and I'll be over here jealous  lol.

Well there's three of you buying them, which with any luck at all will result in hundreds of fry on the Island by Summer  .
