I'm starting to think that one of my females that I posted a pic of a few weeks ago after I bought them, is a male. He looks like a female. I've tried putting 5 different males with him/her and not a one tries to "hit" her/him. How dare they play tricks on me:twitcy: . That's just not nice....lol Mel's right it's a conspiracy...lol
Seriously though, it's been a few weeks and nothing in the gravid spot and no male tries to hit at her/him. How long should I wait. I'm a little frustrated that I wasted the money on a non breeder.

Keep her/him in a tank without males for a week or two, or with just females, if you can. That usually brings on maturity in Sword males. You can also compare the anal fin with those you know are female - the extension there will start first, if they're like my sneaky males.

Is this one of the lyre's from Kritters? I swear all three females I bought there a few weeks ago are going to end up being males. I was sooo sure I could see a gravid spot in each one.... now nothing.... Maybe they wernt feeding them and we were seeing the "hollow spot";)
If they end up men I'm gonna see if I can trade them in on the next batch they get!;)

Is that the place on View st? If so then, yup.. that's the place. I get names mixed up..:twitcy: What a disappointment!!! I had a guy here tonight trading me some cory's for a few fish. He was very interested in her/him. If She turns out to be a he, the guy is going to buy her/him from me. If you want I can steer him in your direction as well for more if the trade in thing doesn't work out for you. They sell very well on usedvictoria if you post pics. People really like them.

Yup the place on View. Im gonna wait a while longer and see what happens. They are in one of my snail tanks.. so they arent taking up any space.
On a YIPPIE note, I too got a few of those hi fins today, and I have already swooped out 16 fry from my quarentine tank::D: I have no clue which fish gave birth, but some of the fry are red and some are black.. so its mystery baby time.

What color of the hifins did you end up picking? And congrats on the fry, when it rains it pours.

Wow, awsome!!! Congrats on the fry!!!! I got a few females that are preg but I think it'll be a little while yet until they drop. Of course I'm going off the comparison with my female Lyres that look like baluga's...lol
I got a sunset coloured female and a kind of blah one that has a black tail but no real colour in the body. They were the last two females left so I snatched them up for the high fin and figured I'd breed some colour into her line later. He always has some of the nicest fish in there though.
This sounds so cold, but when i'm done breeding the highfin males, i'll be passing them on to someone else after they've done their job. Any of you interested??? I have one of the black that shines blue and green as well as a beautiful sunrise.
Hey Shelly, did you happen to see the male at the store with dark red body and white dorsal and tail???? Would you have thought there might be some koi in him???

I bought 2 pineapple females, one red female that has a black stripe on the top and bottom of her tail ( shes the one that dropped fry) that would look just awsome in a lyretail, and a black male that has a bright orange sword and top fin.
I took a walk to the view street store and looked at the remaining lyre swords. They had about 1/2 dozen left, and all were most definatly males. She said they may have more next week.
Congrats on your new babies. Its always fun seeing what colors they turn out to be. Half of my new batch are either blacks or some kind of tux's. They look like little black skinny sticks! Uglyist babies I have ever seen:smile: I need to fatten um up a little, not a problem around here I'm afraid;)

I was actually thinking the other day that those black markings would look great on a Lyre. The tail markings are called 'comet' and they come from Platy's. Sounds like you got some beauties!
