View Full Version : Cory spawning triggers

I have done some tests on some spawning triggers on a few corys.. I added powerheads to the tanks to see if the increased current would help get them spawning. One tank I had C112, the other Corydoras zygatus.. well the C112 spawned in 24 hours.. the zygatus spawned after a week of the powerhead being added.. both fish almost immediately went into pre-spawning routine.. chasing each other.. up and down the glass, etc.. etc..

well I got 70+ eggs from the C112, and the zygatus are actually spawning right now.
here is the pair of zygatus spawning right now...

They're beautiful  . I think you & I will never have money exchange hands, we'll be too busy trading  .

Some of the Cory's are tough spawners, but as with any tough spawner, think Spring in their native habitat and you'll almost certainly hit it eventually. There are some very extreme methods of pulling that off for the determined breeder. I've even used watering cans to simulate rainfall, rather than just doing waterchanges  . I can't even remember what fish that was for or if it worked...lol....I think it was Ghost Cats because I accidentally conditioned a female once and missed the spawn while on vacation, supposing there ever was a spawn.

Then there are the stories where the breeder tried everything. You can't help but admire him, he's that determined. Nadda. Then he gives up and they spawn.:twitcy:

she is laying eggs 8-10 at a time and must have about 80 eggs on the glass.. but I am not keeping my hopes up I will have many.. or any fry.. first spawnings usually don't produce very good fertility with corys, and many other fish for that matter. It usually takes them a few tries before they get it right.

They are beauties and I hope you're wrong in this case about it taking a few tries to get it right... it'd be great to get lots of little ones from this spawning. Good luck!

by checking the eggs this morning it looks like the eggs are all infertile (white dot inside the eggs).. ahh well, maybe next time

What do the eggs look like when they have been ferlitized???

they are just tan in color with no white dot in the center.. you can actually see the embryo in the center, or yolk as I like to call it which is usally a tannish color when they are fertile.

and now the third and final cory in a tank with a powerhead has spawned.. those hi-fin corydoras paleatus spawned over the weekend laying close to 100 eggs, with about 40-50 being fertile. All the eggs were placed directly in the current of the powerhead, actually alot of them directly on the bottom glass of the tank. they should hatch in the next couple days and I hope to be able to move them to the habrosus tank before I go on hollidays.. sure hope some of them can make it while I am gone.

It will probably surprise you how many will make it. If I were you I'd throw a ton of live plants in there - the infusorians can feed them almost indefinitly.

I've heard that before, about them laying in the current stream, very interesting.

Add those to our trade list ;) .

I think out of four new LF Bronze, I got me a female, so hopefully I'll get around to spawning those soon.::D:

ya.. the habrosus tank is 50% javamoss.. so i am sure a bunch will survive... and I counted 40+ fertile eggs after work today when I was changing water in the hatching container. I am so excited for this one and hope the fry have the long fins like the two males I have. it feels so good to be back in the breeding game again.

Congrats on the whole process... the more I see you talk about spawning cory's... I'm getting more and more excited to receive my long fins from Pat..... I know where to go for good spawning advice they they get to that point. ;)

well I came home and flipped through the javamoss in the habrosus tank to find a bunch of paleatus fry had survived my hollidays.. and to my surprise, there was an egg from the habrosus in the tank as well. I will have to look closer to see if there is any fertile eggs from the habrosus either this evening or tomorrow.

Soooooooo in that case.... you'll get... a long finned, bunny with gills. He he he add me to that list... :;):
Seriously, how are all of your fry doing?? How many do you think you have? If you end up selling you can add me to the LF Cory list. You'll have to take pics when they're large enough. I've never seen cory fry, that would be ADORABLE!!! Are they playful already?

How large were the parents? Or approx how old??? Sorry, i'm just chalked full of questions. I bet it's fun being able to spawn those guys!!! Congrats again:notworthy:

the fry are doing great.. they have started on their bbs diet as of last night.. the bellies are a nice glowing orange and I am guessing they are still under a cm in length. I probably have at least 20 of them too, but it is really hard to tell as there is so much javamoss in the tank which makes it hard to get an accurate number.

I am not sure how old the parents are, but they are about 2.5" or so in length.

I set the powerheads up in two more tanks last night.. one in the corydoras napoensis tank, and the other in the corydoras melanotaenia tank.. I guess we will see how they react to the extra current.
