Snagged this today after hitting 5 different garden places.
Any body know how much water it would hold?

Great looking barrel. Should make a nifty looking pond with that pump. No idea how much it will hold. Since it's a wooden barrel and you're going to have to soak it anyways to get it to hold water (& draw out any bad stuff it might leech into the water), try using a 5g bucket and start filling. (I'll wait here  while you do that.)

Another option would be to use some sort of sealant that is non-toxic to coat the inside of the tub.

You can buy liners specifically for those half barrels, pond stores, maybe feed stores.

Awaiting an update on this pond in progress. And yes I do realize you are still dealing with winter. It's just that it's getting closer to pond season here on the west coast that makes me keep thinking about your pond. Don't forget to keep us posted on the progress.

I used to have one that held 29 gallons of water that looks similar in size.

I had no idea they were that big! Now I really want one.

Pamelajo
Apr 13th 2007, 02:36 PM
I was thinking it held between 20 - 30 so not far off. I found the pump and attachments at BA. Will be getting them in the near future. Have not had time to look for a liner yet.

Did the plans get stalled by the snow storm or did you not get that one? My Mom was talking about it tonight. That must be hard to take this time of year.

Pamelajo
Apr 13th 2007, 09:11 PM
No snow cept flurries, but it is cold. Okay it is not really really just feels like after having spring like weather for a bit. I don't remember it being this cold half way through April. I am hoping to put in my Big Al's order this week.

Glad to hear that the storm missed you. Can't take too much longer for Spring to hit now!

Went out today looking for a liner. Found a formed one for $35 nope only paid $30 for the barrel. Checked out few more places and then went to a farm supply store and found a kit with a sheet liner and pump. It looked like it had a biofilter attachment on the box, great everything in one box. Nope taking it back no biofilter, that part in pic is not in box and can't get a bio attachment. Hubby looks at the liner and says I can get a sheet of heavy mil plastic that will do the same and get the pump I originally wanted.
So bag to shopping.

I suppose that stuff will be expensive at the beginning of the season  .

Pamelajo
Apr 14th 2007, 09:00 PM
Even the left over stuff from last year was expensive. The pump from big Al's and the attachments that CAC found part #s for I can get also get from there. It will be about $51 - $10 I have from points. So the pond with have cost me $71 plus the paint. Actually Hubby has some water proof paint we are going to try instead of a liner.
Came up with that plan tonight. He is making a little platform for the pump that takes up as little surface space as possible.

Melody
Apr 14th 2007, 09:12 PM
Its great that he's working with you on it. You're a creative thinker, I'm sure you'll come up with a way to do it for less than digging one would cost  .

Pamelajo
Apr 14th 2007, 09:16 PM
Yeh, he grumbles a lot but he is usually doing something to help with my projects(obsessions). Get this he does not want me to use my good fish in it, in case something happens to them. He wants me to buy a cheap Goldfish. I had to explain the whole size thing and then in the fall what I am supposed to do with it.

Melody
Apr 15th 2007, 01:03 AM
lol Well you can use Livebearers - they repopulate easily enough. How's the Swordtails doing? They'd love it out there.

Pamelajo
Apr 15th 2007, 08:13 AM
I have had the two females in nursery tank hoping they would drop for over a month now and they just keep getting bigger no little ones yet.

Melody
Apr 15th 2007, 10:41 AM
Is there a heater in there? My Swordtails do that to me all the time, bratts! Adding a heater does seem to help though.

Pamelajo
Apr 15th 2007, 03:39 PM
Yep there is a heater at 75

Melody
Apr 15th 2007, 05:32 PM
Then they are just bratts, no more, no less. They have probably given birth & ate 'em, but stick their tummy out so you think they're still preggers & leave them in their little castle.

Pamelajo
Apr 15th 2007, 05:37 PM
yep brats they are.

Hubby and I took a drive out to Big Al's today and I got my Rio 600 pump they did not have the attachments I need, but can get them online through Big Al's. So will be ordering them Wednesday.
Jay- the guy in the store who is the manager did not know these parts existed. He said he learned something new today. Since you did the leg work thought I would pass that along to you.

Pamelajo
Apr 15th 2007, 06:34 PM
The paint I am going to try to seal the barrel with it comes in two colours, black and silver kind of. I thinking about the silver so it is not so dark. The barrel will only be getting morning sun and evening sun. I would love to put a light in the bottom for the evenings, but that may have to wait til next year.

CACAdmin
Apr 15th 2007, 07:43 PM
The only reason I knew the additional parts existed was through a 'parts list' that had come with my pump I got last year. Originally, I had asked Big Al's carried the attachments and had been told 'no'. So that's why my plan was to contact the Rio people and find out which parts I actually needed and then was going to order from them directly. Since your store manager has told you that you can get them online, I will check which route is cheaper. Thanks!

As for a light in the pond, that's a really cool idea. I know it's in 'next year's plans' but if you come across something that's quite small and not too expensive, let me know... that is if you don't mind my 'stealing' your idea. Thanks.

Pamelajo
Apr 15th 2007, 07:49 PM
Not a problem will let you know.
Jay I checked for parts for the 90 on line when I was looking for mine, but could not find them, but maybe if you call they can order since they get the rest anyway. If you order $35 shipping is free.

Apr 15th 2007, 07:56 PM

Hubby and I put the first coat of POR pain on, but could afford to use another can. So hubby painted it on the weekend for me and attached the pump. I wanted the inside to be grey/silver but hubby thought this would look better. Now waiting for it to dry them will attach machinical pump and fill it.

You'll really enjoy it, I'm sure. It's so nice to sit out on the deck with the water flowing into the pond. Very relaxing... I know... even though I only have a small concrete balcony, my pond adds that touch of nature. Speaking of which I had better get to ordering the conversion kit for my pump. (Good thing you're around to motivate me. )

Pamelajo

Thank you. You could always set one up indoors. Hubby is trying to convince me to put a gold fish in it. He figures since I will bring it in for the winter the gold fish can stay in it. This from the guy that tells me I have enough tanks.

Wow it looks great! What did you use to line it with? As far the colour goes on the inside, that blue is a great color to show fish with.

I use POR Paint and then one coat of latex I think would have to ask hubby.

I just want to put dibs on a chair by the pond on your deck... great place to sit and back and relax (glass of wine in hand)... after all, I did help, didn't I? :FishQuestion: .... that's if your hubby would tolerate a visit from someone who encouraged you to spend more money on fishy stuff (the pond). However, first of all I'd have to find some way to come up with the airfare to get there...:twitcy: And before anybody (with or without the help of Ms. Melody) gets any ideas or starts any rumors:wideeyed: , I'm talking about visiting Ms. Pamelajo AND her hubby!

I will reserve a chair for you Jay.
I still have not gotten the rest of the parts yet but today we started up the pump to make sure it is going to work and so far so good. It works great Jay that size pump is perfect.

Thanks! Glad to hear the pump is the right size... I'm a little slow and haven't yet ordered my conversion kit for my pump... will do this week as finally temps here are starting to warm so that I actually feel like cleaning up the balcony. (That's step #1...lol)

Pam, just checking in on the status of your container pond. Did you get the rest of the parts ok? Is it up and running yet?

Pamelajo
May 23rd 2007, 03:28 PM
Got all the parts. Just need to get some electrical wire so hubby can give me a plug in near the barrel. Steph has started ball so have not had much time. Hoping to get the wire this weekend.

Sounds good. Don't forget to post a pic when you do get it up and running. I couldn't get the part for my pump. Big Als inquired for me and I have asked elsewhere. It seems wholesalers do not bring in those parts for the smaller pumps. I could order it direct from Rio, but the shipping is as much or more than the part and then there will be duty as it is not made in the US. And so I am improvising instead.. just have to figure out a way to attach a sponge over the intake cover to act as a filter.
