One of the biggest killers of fish in aquariums is overfeeding. The conditions in the tank deteriorate very quickly and either kill the fish with ammonia/nitrite spikes, or stress the fish to the point of weakening its immune system.
It is difficult to describe just how much a person should feed their fish. The following site is an excellent guideline, naming various species and suggesting the number of flakes. You will only have to actually count flakes a few times before you get a feel for how much to feed the tank, or you can simply measure the amount with a Tablespoon so you know how much to use.
It names Aquarian food, but will guide you with any high quality flake.
