View Full Version : A tank worth the battle....

Well the whole battle started out when I woke up to the sounds of a water fall at six o'clock in the morning on my day off. It turned out that my 35 gallon tank had decided to loose a seal on the bottom...and water my living room carpet. Over half the water had ended up on the floor by the time I found it.

Battle one....I spend all day tending to temporary rubbermaid holding tanks for my numerous fish and snails....I only had one working air pump (the other had become water logged....<glad I discovered the leak when I did>), so I kept moving it between the rubbermaids, and my cherry shrimp tank. didn't want anyone the die. I ended up going to Petsmart and buying a 29 gallond tank and getting that all set up. I gave most of my baby fish and little little snails to a friend (for puffer food), I kept all the good ones though.

Battle two....Now that the tank was set up.....the cycling process began. My poor fish. They survived the cycling.....but well....that lead to battle number three.

Battle three.... ICH!!! Yep, all my fish got ich. I ended up doing the following things to treat it (had to be careful cause of my snails):
-over 48 hours I raised the salinity of the tank by dissolving aquarium salt in a glass of water and slowly adding it.
-over 4 hours I raised the water temp. to 82 degrees (2 degrees and hour)
-after the 72 hours I started treating the tank with Aquarisol.
I was worried that this would harm the snails, but after treating the tank for 10 days, only one snail didn't survive.

So here are some pictures of my new setup....and I'm proud of it.

Ah the trials and tribulations of fish-keeping. The good part about a busted tank is a new replacement though, and you've done an awesome job on yours! Glad to hear that things have settled down for you.:)

I was still able to find a use for the 35 gallon. It now houses 6 hermit crabs.
