With the fish shortage crisis coming into focus, alternatives are big business. Fishmeal is expected to increase sharply in price, so expect to see it replaced with other ingredients soon. Hopefully that won't mean inferior alternatives.
I think the insect protein has great potential. Many fish eat insects in the wild, especially the small varieties like those best suited for the average aquarium. My concern would be disease of course, and that the nutrition be maintained if heat is used to 'disinfect'.
If all goes well, you should start to see 'Insect Protein' on labels in a year or so.
For more info, check out the article 'New insect protein for fish could help address supply concerns (http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/news/ng.asp?n=75510-neptune-industries-fish-protein)'.
I wonder what else they'll come up with for fish foods? I think we are going to see fish food prices increase sharply soon, even though they'e already high at the retail level. It wasn't that long ago that $12 could feed my fish for a couple of months, now I'm lucky to get a container of decent food for $12, and it wouldn't last two weeks if I was feeding it exclusively.
