Red Cherry Shrimp... I need to know if my plant fertilizers will effect them.
i use AP plant tabs and flourish excel.
I know iron of some sort can hurt them. I've never really kept shrimp before so excuse my ignorance. Just want to get all the kinks worked out before i get them.

Copper is the big one. I've heard that Excel has it in it but I've never had that confirmed. I'm sure those with more Shrimp & plant experience can give you something more concrete.
The only true ignorance is a closed mind, and you could never be accused of that :;): . Its great that you're looking into it - good thinking!

It doesn't say that it has it on the back of the bottle.
Thanks for the help Mel

API no longer lists all of their ingredients on their bottles. (according to Aquarium Magazine, an article I read about it a few months back) It wasn't that they were hiding the info if my memory serves me correctly they couldn't fit everything on it. I was going to use it with my goldies and then became paranoid about what wasn't listed but I know many who use it successful with golds. But not too sure about the shrimp. You may want to check API's website which I believe states all of the ingredients. But don't quote me on that one, its been a LONG morning and its not even 8 am yet.
Good luck with your shrimp.

Okay it was early when I read that post, still waiting on the caffine to get going.
I emailed API your question and usually the respond pretty fast, when they do I'll post the answer. Or if you are in need of instant gratification (trust me I get this I'm one of those I wanted it yesterday type of people myself) you can contact them directly. Here's the info I got after posing your question.
Thank you for contacting us!

I've seen this pondered and debated in forums before. It will be nice to have a definite answer.
After clearing the fog in my brain which didn't have morning as an excuse, I remembered that someone had killed their snails & shrimp with Excel, but I think they had overdosed.

I've emailed Seachem about Excel but they said that Excel is a simply a carbohydrate, everything is organic and does not contain metals. They said if used as per recommended dosing instructions, your inverts should be fine.
I still don't use it in my shrimp tanks unless I have a bout of black brush algae and even when dosing, the shrimplets still keep on coming. Not all liquid fertilizers are equal, some have higher concentrations of copper than others.
Most shrimp forums discourage the use of any fertilizers, just an accident waiting to happen they say. I dose when I do a water change and add a dechlor that removes heavy metals. YMMV, but it works for me.

Maybe its just the doseage one has to watch then, for whatever reason the inverts don't like it in quantity. Nice to rule out metals and hear another experience with it, thanks!

I have used plant grow by nutri fin. I only use 1/2 dose when I do a water change for the shrimp tank and have only used it twice, since getting my plants from Waterpond. It was the only thing I had on hand. So far no problems. But to be safe I am getting some PMDD from MyKiss which he uses in his tanks.
