I saw plastic grass/clover kind of mats in the dollar store and you attach them together to make a big one. Was wondering if anyone has tried them in a tank. Was thinking it might be a good egg hiding place for egg scatters.

Yep when I rescued fry last year I used them, they liked to hide in them and were able to get at food the larger fish couldn't. Great idea to use it as a spawning lawn though...I may have to try that!

I've used 'Plant Mats' for quite some time, but they're no dollar store item....lol...good find! These things cost $20 each. I use them as floaters for fry savers, with corks in them, like this:

Hmmm with some knitting board, a glue gun and some plastic plants you could make em.

Have we found another DYI project?? Or cheap nursery?
Thanks guys. Using as a carpet or floating great. These ones are not that big maybe 6" x 6". Adding the dollar store to my list for tomorrow.

I'll be anxiously awaiting the DIY post from you ladies. Me? I have to stick to "Do it and sell it to some sucker like Melody" lol. I am not in the least 'crafty' and I greatly admire those who are. Definitly the stuff that a frugal fishkeeper post is made of. Now I have to scour my dollar stores to see if they're there. Are they just with the other plastic plants?

I found it at Dollarama if you have one out there. If not let me know and I can pick some up and we can put it in when we do the trade. Side tracking .. Mel did not get any LF BN's from the last batch, think they got eaten. But he now has another batch and moved him and barnacle to safer tank with just cories. Fingers crossed.

I think we have them here... I'll check it out and let you know, thanks!

No rush on the trade - I'd like to get some Rainbows in for you later on when I'm getting a big fat paycheque....lol....so there's lots of time to see if we have some LF's. Good luck!

I was thinking about using them in the plant eaters (snails) tanks.

Good thinking! I quite often keep fry in my plant-eater tanks because both require frequent water changes.

It was funny - my Son has a tank that I keep some Marisa in, and he decorated it. He has this weird silver plastic plant in there, buy hey, its his tank, I left it there.

I saw Peggy post a pic once of Marisa eggs completely covering the exact same plant as my Son has. When I got Marisas they went into that tank and to this day their fave place to lay is on that silver plant, in spite of the fact that there are similar plastics in there. Go figure.

Great find.

Now what do you do to get them ready for the tank? Do you boil or just soak?

I am not sure about boiling it might melt them, but rinsing them in really hot water with water conditioner.
