Early this evening, I notice an adult P. Bridgesii snail bobbing up and down near the top of the tank... in the cascade of water from my HOB filter. I looked carefully. The snail was partially open. I wondered if something was wrong. I picked it up, and as I held it in my hand. He retreated into his shell slamming (well not exactly slamming) his trapdoor shut. I put him back in the tank, he sank to the bottom and then after a while, opened up and wandered off.

I came home hours later to find him and a buddy bouncing up and down in the cascade of water from the filter.... both partially out of their shells. I have no idea what they're up to. Either they're taking a shower or they think this is some sort of amusement ride.:twitcy: Any ideas? Does anyone else have snails that do this?

They like airstones too. Cana's seem to especially like to play in that manner. I suppose it could signify a problem, but in general it just seems to be something they discover and enjoy. That's what we assume anyway.

In the wild they use their buoyancy tricks to travel, the people at Applesnail.net tell me, so maybe its something to do with Spring... Not enough mates, too many snails in the tank (according to them) or something. Certainly isn't a food shortage  .

Mine were doing the same exact thing last night. At the water surface line, the more they bobbed the more their siphons came out. I was wondering if it was a way to get fresh air into their shells or to expel air out? Its kinda freaky when they are all lined up doing it isn't it?

Some of mine like to gather in the flow from the power head as well. Many times I will find 2, 3 or 4 all gathered together in the current. Go figure?

Mine like to ride up the bubble curtain I have along the back. Look like little parachute guys. lol

As of this morning there were four participating... but now as we speak one has decided he's had his fun and has quit. That must be priceless to see them doing it with their siphons out. Silly snails!
