We have a new little routine in one of my tanks with one of the Black-Eyed Gold Bristlenoses. He has figured out that when I put the food in that tank, it sits on top of the duckweed. I put it by the edge in about the same place everytime, because its less dense there. I sprinkle it lightly so it sits there for a bit, allowing the younger fish to nibble before it falls to the bigger fish.
This guy knows the minute I approach now, where that food is going. He works his way up the minute I add it...

Finds it with the tip of his nose...

Then goes right up above the waterline to feed before anyone else realizes its up there...

Of course, he ends up knocking a bunch down so the others aren't long catching on and joining in, but he gets the majority. None of the others have figured it out, including 3 other BN's. Funny how some are smarter than others. Maybe he just accidentally figured it out one day, but he's never forgotten it anyway.

Works well for both of us actually - too much would probably be left up there if he didn't go up and shake the apple tree.

Not surprisingly, he's the biggest one in there. Hopefully it will put him in the spawning mood. ::D: Those particular flakes are quite high in protein & nutrients - they're Ocean Nutrition.

Awww that's one cute pleco...Wait until the others figure out what he IS doing. You'll end up like me, the other day I was walking over to feed them and saw dorsal fins sticking out of the water! Greedy little beggers all hover at the surface now whenever anyone is near the tank.

I think the most frenzied eaters have got to be Platy's, especially young ones. All fish get excited when they think the food is coming, but these things are in frenzied masses the second I approach the tank. You'd swear to the fish gods that they hadn't been fed in a week, even if they've just eaten. Seriously, you'd wonder if I was starving them if you dropped by and approached the tank, that's how frenzied they get.

I'd have to agree with you on that one.! Frenzied is the only way to describe it... and it has no bearing on whether or not they have just eaten. My plecos never come to the surface... I guess they find too much to satisfy them at the bottom of the tank... however they move into position on the gravel near where I feed as soon as I open the tank lid.

You certainly hit the nail on the head there. But don't forget about goldfish. Mine get in a panic if they even see the dog by their tank.:twitcy: Really now...like the dog spends alot of time feeding them.

LOL Maybe they want to eat the dog!
If I recall correctly, you're quite right, my Goldfish used to do the same thing. It probably impresses me more with the Platy's because there's so many of them that its like a swarm of bees.
