I was thinking of trying to obtain some decorative dead corals for my freshwater tanks to harden the water. They're also attractive.

However, I am concerned that there are environmental issues which I may inadvertently contribute to by purchasing them.

How exactly is dead coral collected/produced? Are they gathered 'dead' or are they killed off? Is there anything I should be aware of to do this responsibly, or should I just not do it at all?

Dont buy dead decorator coral from shops. Those corals are collected, bleached and sometime colored. What you can do to is post on a saltwater board such as Canreef and ask for dead corals. Most everyone has had a coral or two die, and are happy to get rid of the bodys :;):

I have this if you want it:

It's about 6-7" wide. I got it from my uncle when I picked up all that dead base rock. I have no use for it so it's yours if you want it.

You can also buy barnacle shells. They do the same thing, and they also add places for small fish ti hide inside.

I don't want to sell it, I like it, but it's coming out of the water and I'm now officially a collector  . BUT seriously, I'm giving it back to you. Friends don't :Neener: when these things happen and I'll never need money bad enough to stab someone in the back for it. It has to be bad karma if nothing else...lol.

Yours/mine/ours is smaller than his. I can't see it being worth $1000 as he says, but I'm no coral collecting expert by any means. It's kind of a sad representation of what humans have done, when you think about it.::(:
