View Full Version : It's MY Cave!

I have 4 plecos: 1 clown and 3 white-tipped BN. Each has their own 'cave'. The largest cave is a hollow log 'owned' by the clown pleco (the smallest pleco... but he staked that out first even when I had 2 larger commons in the tank). The others have chosen holes in the rocks or crevices in between the rock piles. These guys never have a problem with each other or the occasional other fish who swims in to check out their caves.
However, tonight, when feeding, I saw one 'visitor' rudely turfed out of the largest pleco's cave. It was one of my snails... this Brig (about the size of a quarter) had wandered into the cave and (I'm guessing) decided to take a nap. Home comes Mr. Pleco and suddenly this snail is tossed about 8 inches across the aquarium like a football... landing unceremoniously on his back on the gravel. He's probably wondering what the heck happened. Mr. Pleco of course simply then slips into his cave. I wonder if Mr. Snail has learned not to invade a pleco's cave... :nah:somehow I doubt it.

What a funny scenario...I wonder how soon you'll be seeing snail rugby again? Maybe the snail needs his own terracotta pot or a crash helmet. :wideeyed:

Either a crash helmet or he needs a reinforced shell. It was priceless because I had no idea that it was coming. UC the entrance to the cave faces the back of the tank with just part of the opening visable from the side. All I can usually see it the tail of the pleco sticking out. So I had no idea the snail was in there until the rugby match began. I couldn't help but laugh and wished I could have caught it on camera.

 LOL Snails love caves, so I'm sure it wasn't the first time, nor will it be the last.

my pleco, or anyone else for that matter, doesn't use caves... what's the deal with that?
I have a hollow log, 2 clay pots, one clay pleco saucer thingy, and it's moderately planted... are my fish just freaks? I have been wondering this for a while:twitcy:

I don't know, only my plecos and snails use caves. Well I don't know if the snails actually use them, they'll wander in anywhere that has any potential of containing tempting morsels of food. My platys don't stay in one place long enough to 'use' one, my gouramis are way to big for any caves I have... they and the mollies prefer the plants as a hangout.
So maybe it's the type of fish you have or they simply like your flair for 'interior decorating'.:twitcy:

My bns only like barnacles. And most of them are getting pretty brittle so not sure what I am going to use for them to breed when the barnacles fall apart.

That's a good idea Pam! Maybe you should start producing them.
JT - I'd say that means they're very secure. I'm no catfish expert, but that's my guess. I think they like the dark during the day, so maybe there's enough dark spots in the tank to keep them content.
