View Full Version : Disinfecting With Salt

I was just wondering if it would be easier on plants to disinfect with a salt dip? I know many of them don't like salt over the long term, but wouldn't a saline disinfection be more pleasant than bleach?
I don't know that it would kill off Ich cysts, but it should look after pretty much everything else.
As y'all know, I'm not exactly a plant expert, so feel free to blow the theory out of the water if necessary....lol.

I use Jungle's CC or Parasite Clear to disenfect my plants. I've used salt in the past and killed off a lot of plants that way. :(

Just a salt soak killed them or salt in the tank?
I am also disinfecting for pest snails & bacteria, so the med's don't do the job. I can quarantine for parasites - they can't live forever without a host.
I suppose I should just get some Potasium Permanganate, but I keep forgetting to ask at the pharmacy.
Thanks!

If memory serves me correctly the CC and Parasite Clear also kills pest snails. Or you could use Had A Snail. I'm a serial plant murderer I've killed them both in the tank with salt and out of the tank in a bucket. Killed them trying the 2 minute bleach soak too, hence why my tank all have fake plants in them, which I hate. Though I have had a crypt for 3 months now which is growing beautifully, which means my fish will soon shred it.
PP is the best plan of action, I have to get some myself.

I've always gradually add salt to my aquariums and then continue with the 1 tbsp / 5 gal rule for water changes. All of my plants have adjusted to the change some how and are very healthy and growing well. I find it's a sudden shock of dumping salt in a no salt tank that kills them, for me anyway.... good luck:yes:

Jungle product "Clear Water" says it is PP. But I find that even rinsing under water, then soaking in that product, then draining and rinsing the plants again, before putting in the tank, I still have hitchhikers.

Hmmm... I think I'll try a dip in very high salinity just to see if it works & kills the right things. I know it will kill bacteria and any live parasites along with snails, I just hope it doesn't kill the plants. :wideeyed:

Do you have a "test" plant you can use for the high salinity? Be interesting to see how things go for you. Keep us posted.
