You've seen Ms. Purple Platy, so I thought I'd post some of the other Variatus Hifins.

A couple of the females:

Pair & co:

Males - this tank is hard to get a decent shot in, but you'll get the general idea:

Thanks! They need a lot of work actually - the dorsals can be huge, with length and thickness that you would not believe. They're a start though so I'll see what I can do with them. I have a non-techie friend in the US who breeds absolutely breathtaking versions - he's recognized by even the gurus as the Platy master :notworthy: . He doesn't do Paypal & all that, so its a matter of getting it all arranged, then I'll get some. He doesn't like to sell as a rule so I am quite honoured that he's willing to send some to me. Such a talented breeder - he even started with store stock when he couldn't find quality like he saw in the mag's. Then he proceeded to take them into a new colour strain. Not only that, but he kept very few tanks, less than I do. Just goes to show that its possible!

Melody, can't wait to see what you acheive with these guys. And definately can't wait to see the new stock you'll be receiving from the "guru Platy Master". You are so lucky.

Beauties! I just those huge dosals on the males. Wow! It is amazing what can be achieved with patience and persistance and a good understanding of genetics.

Thanks! I'll send you home with some fry when they're born if you like - you're forever playing taxi for me & you do such a great job on the Platy's, I'd like to see what you could do with these too. They're tough to find on the market without bringing them in. I have found lots of Swordtails with that kind of dorsal, but not Platy's. The funny thing is, the long Hifin dorsals on Swordtails, came from Platy's  .

I am lucky to have had him as a friend over the years - I value that and his knowledge that he shares with me much more than his fish. I wouldn't care if he never sent me one actually, its just fantastic that he will. I could talk friends like him all day for a decade and still not know as much as they do. He's a hobbyist from the heart out and his passion is breeding, not profit. I admire & respect him very much.

Thank you so much! I'd love to have some fry. You're the best! As for playing taxi, doing things for others just makes the hobby that much more fun... and everyone benefits... what goes around comes around.::D: I'd love to try to see what I could achieve with those dorsals. They're amazing.

You've been very good to me Jay, it would make me happy. Just about all of the hobbyists I've dealt with have been awesome to me actually - it was a pleasant surprise when I started socializing with other aquarists. The hobby attracts good people for the most part I guess. Serious fishkeeping involves a lot of giving - you don't get the feedback that you get from a dog or cat, so I guess there's a certain personality that the hobby attracts quite often.

Besides, you do fantastic work and somewhere down the road you'll produce something that I absolutely must have - purely selfish of me really. BUT seriously though, I've admired how much you've done with the hifins you currently have in the Maculatus form, your avatar for example, and you've brought the trait into some awesome color forms while you're at it. You're a Platy guru in the making!

You don't have anything they don't have - it all starts with a love for what you're doing, just like anything else.

Managed to get a few more shots of the males tonight....

These two spend most of their time challenging each other:

I have some nice Hifin Maculatus on the way in. I'm hoping that an outcross to a Maculatus Hifin female will thicken the finnage up.

I think I need shock therapy or to poke my eyes out or something so I cannot look at anymore fish!

First cories and shrimp and now I find myself lurking amidst the mollies, sailfins and platy section in the LFS!

CAC=BAD! lol

Those are some gorgeous fish...

Thanks! Unfortunately I got my latest ALA issue and they make me have Hifin Platy envy. Mine are largely garbage compared to the good stuff  . I wouldn't even send pic's of mine to that bunch - they'd send me sympathy cards....ROFL. However, I'll have fun working the lines and will buy some of the really awesome fish in the meantime to make myself feel better... well, after I land that high-paying job any day now.

This is a real Hifin Platy. My friend breeds them & its his particular strain - Hifin Rubynose:

The newest pics of your males are nice. They look super fat and healthy. :)

Thanks - they love the big tank I think. Constantly flitting from one side to the other. They're just young adults so I suppose they're taking a growth spurt in the new digs.

I have one female about to pop. She'll be packing from the last insemination so they'll be regular Hifins (no Plumetails yet). I'll try to find the space to grow them out some so I can pick the nicest finnage to keep. Its great to buy the best, but its more fun to do it myself.
