So this weekend I picked up a ton of hornwort & duckweed. Being I had a lot of other stuff going on I stuck it in a bucket and figured I'd disenfect today. I've tried duckweek in a bleach solution before and killed it beyond repair. This morning I swirled the bucket around and sure enough found a pest snail...And where there's one...So out I went to get some Potassium Permanganate, I went to 3 pharmacies, nothing. No one new what I was talking about, one Pharmacist clearly had no idea as she thogut I was looking for an herbal cleanse, suggested diet pill instead :twitcy: ...Yeah no clue. I brought along an article from Wikipedia as well as the correct spelling yet everyone looks at me like I've got six heads. I went to Rona, Home Depot nothing.
Where the heck do you guys buy this from? One pharmacist said (Shoppers Drug Mart) that I would have the have the name of the company who makes it. Gah! If I can't get my hands on PP will salt work? I'm sooo frustrated! Help!
Thanks!

Kordon makes Permoxyn, so you could try calling around to the fish stores for that. Its specifically designed for aquariums. Its also used for parasites.
Apparently it is also available where they sell water softeners.

Thanks I tried to find that as well but no luck. I guess I'll have to order it online.

Do you have a store around that deals in water filtration? I'm sure I read somewhere that Sears & London Drugs carries it, but I can't find the reference to it again.

I'm not too sure but I'll check thanks! Today is water changing day on the 3 big tanks...Which means I'm not going anywhere any time soon lol.

Try pool or hot tub places, they may have it. Also, Jungle's "Clear Water" is PP. I found that at Walmart here.

That because brigs ar so pretty, it's easy for them to find a nice, loving home, but the little "pest snails" find few and far between that will love them for who they are. The little food munching, plant cleaning, algae grazing cuties that they are. How can anyone hate a snail? have you looked at their tinsy little feelers? their tiny weeny little sucking mouths?

I don't believe I ever said I 'hated' anything actually. I've looked at them plenty after I became overrun with them while I was on vacation and they destroyed two of my filters. If I was planning on putting these plants in a small tank it really wouldn't be a problem, however these plants are going into a 150 and 2 90 gallon tanks which house large goldfish. I don't keep snails with fish as my fish would eat them or torture them until they died, in my opinion that would be much more inhumane.
I actually really like snails I have 3 brig tanks, a spixi tank, haustrum tank with an additional rogue cana running around. I keep all of my snails seperated and haven't the room for anything additional especially since I'm waiting on 3 clutches to hatch. So it's not that I'm a snail hater...I'm a person who likes her Eheim filters and cannot afford to replace them again. :)

Now that would be helpful! Right now my plants are soaking in a solution of parasite clear. Being as I am a serial plant murderer if they survive the 3 rounds of pc then perhaps I'll stick em in the tank. Apparently a friend has used this method with much success. 3 full rounds of parasite clear...I'm thinking of rinsing them under bleach after the week of pc is over. I wish I could buy duckweed seeds somewhere grow them myself then my fears of pest snails/ parasites would be over. God I can't wait to get my uv's!

I wish UV did pest snails....lol....but I wouldn't give mine up regardless. Love the thing - bought the most expensive one I could find so it would also kill the superbugs. I was a tad frustrated after one went through my tanks and it took bleach to get rid of it.
Let us know how the treatment goes! Hornwort is probably the culprit, by the way, they seem to love laying on that stuff.

Yes it would be nice if the uv's handled pests as well. Which UV did you get? I was looking into the Coral Life Turbo Twist, I know two breeders who use them with much success. I HATE having to use bleach I'm always super paranoid that I've missed a spot and am going to instantly kill everything lol. Thank god for Prime and good ole sunlight.
PS
My little buddy (which came from Peggy that came from you errrr I think) says hi! LOL

Completely missed the snail...lol...syphons still gross me out for some odd reason.
I brought in the breeding colony and was going to send some to Peggy. We decided that we had a better chance at getting pairs if we kept them all together, so I sent her the entire colony. The snails she sent you are the results :;): .

Kat's snails, meet your Grandparents.... or parents as the case may be:

I use a Coral Turbo-Twist - 9 watt on my tanks (it's HOB so it's portable). I use it with a Marineland Max-Jet 400 pump but have to really slow down the flow rate for it to have an effect on anything other than algae. To slow the rate, I put a filter floss in the intake and also clamp the outflow tube to restrict the flow and ensure there is enough exposure to the UV to kill everything. But, it does work. Because it's HOB, I don't use it all the time... only when needed to kill off something in my tank.
The tanks I use it on are a 70g and a 20g

Cool! That snail in particular is funny...He'll find the highest point in the tank, even it means sitting on someone to do so and stick his siphon out as far as he can go. He's too darn lazy to climb to the top. It is freaky but his laziness makes me laugh. I love my haustrums except they won't breed for anything...The only snail all 4 were interested in was a brig smaller then the size of a pea, the creeps hence why they are in their own tanks now.
Its pretty funny/interesting how the snail bloodline gets around!
