Hi Guys,
At my LFS today for the first time they have Cherry Shrimp and Algae Eating Shrimp (that's what they are labeled) are they Amano's or Ghost perhaps? They are brownish/translucent looking. I don't know anything about them other then the last time they had them in December they were gone in less then a day so hopefully someone will come along soon. :)
Anyways I was all set to dive in when I was chatting with a LFS employee and I asked him if they'd be okay with snails. He seemed to think the cherries would go after the snails and try to eat them. I have a haustrum tank with one rogue Cana who can't seem to behave himself no matter where he goes the little perv as well as brig tanks, and spixi/mts tanks would it be possible to keep them with any of those snails? All of my tanks are heated, I have hard water with a ph level of 7.8-8.0 ish.
Thanks!

I have no idea where they get this stuff  . I've kept Cherries with Red Rams, Blue Rams, Viv's & Bridgesii - they sit on top of the Bridgesii and ride them around...lol.
If the algae eating shrimp are quite cheap, they're probably Ghosts. They're usually so cheap they're used as feeders, to give you an idea.
Go get 'em!

Gah! I knew it!! But figured if I bought them just because I bought them they'd kill everything!
Hookay a few more Q's please...
Do they need to be QT'd?
Can they pass anything to the snails?
Do I need my head examined?
How much room do they need?
Lastly you guys are a bad influence! All this talk of mollies, sail fins, gouramis and lyretails had me looking today..And now I want want want!

Do they need to be QT'd? Not to my knowledge, but there are more educated people that I would ask if I were you. Snails don't pass things onto fish, but I suppose bacteria could be on them.
Can they pass anything to the snails? I highly doubt it, but again, can't say for sure.
Do I need my head examined? No - the shrinks are just jealous because the voices only talk to you.
How much room do they need? Very little - some really crowd them up to something like 10/gallon, I'd say 5 adults/gallon max. I'm sure there are some more educated thoughts there too.
Lastly you guys are a bad influence! We pride ourselves in this.

Well I'm too lazy to go all the way back so I just called and got one of the few LFS employee's I trust to put some on the side for me. They had these beautiful blue lobesters and freshwater clams as well. I can't imagine the freshwater clams being very exciting though.

Clams aren't very exciting but they're good cleaners - natural filters. I was looking into them awhile back, should be a post here somewhere.
Sounds like your LFS is really trying to provide some variety, which always rocks.

They had these really pretty and very pregnant sailfins...That's about the time I was dragged out of the store. And (excuse the ignorance) black and white spotted mollies that were really pretty...
Hmmm off to read about clams...
Thanks Melody!

You have to really watch store Livbearers, but the good stores have good sources and I've found some beauts in those. The Spotted Mollies are usually called marble or dalmations - just common names, no ignorance involved. :;):

Yep I would imagine like any other fish...I've pretty much given up on most LFS period. Too many illnesses, bacteria all the filters being connected ugh. When I go home to NY in June there's this little place that specializes in fish only and has a pretty awesome collection. I may have to turn into a smuggler lol.

Its actually no problem to bring fish across the border with you. You just have to have the species name and of course, they can't be banned for any reason. Its shipping them across the border that presents problems.

But you have to bring me something - its in the rules.
Are you flying? You should check with the airline since they're sticky on liquids now. Driving them is no prob.

I'm just teasing - worry about yourself and have fun with it. Besides, my wish list is a zillion pages long.

So there I went with the intent of just a few cherries as mentioned.
Yeah...5 Cherries, 5 Amano and 3 cories!
Cories? What do I know about cories? Other then they are cute as heck, not too much! Gah how does this happen??? They are gorging themselves on algea wafers and bottom bites much to my snails dismay.
The cories seem fine...The snails seem to HATE the shrimp though lol. Not only are they climbing all over their shells, but they are stealing the snails pellets and zipping off on top of the sponge filter with them. :err:

LOL Well there is the food thing, but the snails will manage to get quite enough. Creatures in fishie stores aren't always fed a lot of variety, so they kinda go nuts for it at first. Other stores feed better than I do - I can tell because I'll give them flakes and they give me that "You want me to eat that crap? Where's the Bloodworms & live Brine Shrimp?" look.
What kind of Cory's?

False Julii's.....They are in with the snails at the moment but I'm wondering how they would do with my goldies. I have a greenwater tank I'd love to stick the algae shrimp in but am hesitant that my ranchu would eat em.
In other news I think at least 2 of my shrimp are pregnant...Better them then me!

If the shrimp can fit into the fish's mouth, it will eat it, and thank you for the tastey snack. Probably expect more too.

Yep what I figured...So instead my snails are po'd at me. I think the cories are driving them crazy. They are like little food junkies buzzing/twitching around. Man are these little guys hardy...Not stressed out a bit hit the tank looking for food immediately. :twitcy:
Hmmmm I want more cories now...Gah! Is there such a thing is cories with colours? Off to search!

There's a few colourful ones, but they're more known for patterns. They often have a gold or green sheen though. Their patterns can be very striking. For smaller tanks, my fave are the Panda Cory's - mini Cory's are about the only thing cuter than Cory's....lol.
That madattiver (sp) character that you see floating around here, he has quite a Cory collection that he's breeding.

The cories WERE being hidden in the basement until he went back on another course on Friday for a week....UNTIL...I think they had a snail-toture-palooza last night. So now the three thugs are in my kitchen acclimating in a 20 gallon. It would seem two of them stick together and the third little guy is all over the place...Does this mean I should add one more? They have panda's right now two for $2.99 at my lfs as well.
Yep I'm gonna get killed.

2 for $2.99? Whatchyawaitingfor? Well, except the getting killed part. If they're healthy good stock, I'd offer 3 for $4.44 and not a penny more!

Yes, that's very good - I'm lucky to find them for under $8 each here.
As for another one, my females seem to stick together but you don't absolutely have to have more to even it out. When he wants company, he'll wander over. The more Cory's you have, the more fun they are though (enabler). They get going in groups and swim in patterns up, down & around the glass - very entertaining. They're also very good janitors, so they're practical. :;):

In happier news I just called my LFS they are willing to trade me some cories for my MTS....
I heart dumb people! lmao I'm kidding, really I am. :red_dance:

LOL They'll make a killing on the MTS, selling to innocents, and they breed their own stock while they're at it.
Sorry to hear that the fishy world is overflowing - forget the filter and use the other one temporarily. Your stocking levels can be managed for the long term because they're reasonable - it will just mean an extra waterchange or two. They need the water movement and bacterial filtration that the filter provides, which you can cover with the other filter for the time being.:hugs:

Haven't I heard something about those filters that involves flooding if one doesn't secure the hoses properly? I don't use them so its a stab in the dark.

I'm sure...This is new to me, a friend gave me her set up 90 gallon with a 45 gallon sump. Something tells me my sump will be used for my 4 48's in the basement in the very near future. Right over the drain! Its amazing for biological filtration but everything else not so much. On top of it all being in my front window I have instant green water...Great for the fish I know...But the smell...Yeah I'm planning on going to the States for a AQ 110's in the near future. Since they sell em for $40 bucks.

Yep and never want MTS from me again, but I'm okay with that. I dunno why out of all of the snails they are the least slimy but freak me out the most. I just don't like em. I figure I'll keep one and then have another 50 in a month or so.
Thanks for the filter help..I'm going to wait till my boyfriend gets home and dump the sump problem in his lap and make a run for the cories. I love those little guys they crack me up! I have to go anyways as I'm outta bloodworms and brine shrimp.
Its sad I've been at my LFS every day this week...When I went in last night they laughed and said but where were you this morning?

Sump for the moment is fixed thanks for asking! In a panic I did buy another AQ 110 so the panda budget was a little busted and when my boyfriend comes to the fish store with me I have to behave myself so sadly just 3 little panda cories lol. But he is going away this weekend. I really wanted some sterbai but they were $15 bucks a piece and I wasn't sure if that was extortion or not. Apparently one of the guys breeds cories, and while I was speaking to him about it, his eyes completely glazed over telling me what he could get me speaking in a language I could not understand of the numbers and the letter C lol. I had to explain this is a new venture for me that I am a 'goldfish person'. Most people cannot understand having goldfish in very large tanks with elaborate set ups and look at me weird. Never mind the 3 snail tanks I have.
At the end of the day I have only 1 count it with me people ONE MTS now. Which means I really have about 15 by now lol. At the end of the day one of the fishroom people is a total snail freak and wanted them so bad so I gave them to her. She'll probally hate me and charge me double the next time I see her. :twitcy:
So cross fingers the sump has been working for about 12 hours now thanks! Whew! I gotta get some more of those panda's, they crack me up. The remind me of Keystone Cops.

LOL Its always fun to watch a fishkeeper really get into things. Its ok to stretch it out a little - just makes the fun last longer and you won't overload your q-tank that way.
Sterbais are usually up there in price, especially big ones.
