So I had a cool idea for a tank today. You know those really old TVs from the 50's that have a huge wooden cabinet? I was thinking about finding one of them, gutting it out, reinforcing it and getting a tank custom made to fit inside. I could hinge the top to mount lighting underneath. A nice planted tank would look so cool as the centerpiece of the room. Who needs TV anyways right? So what do you think?

I remember those huge old TVs, were you planning to put the tank just in the screen area or gut the entire front for the tank ?

What a fantastic idea! Why watch TV when you can watch fish. I think of all my fish tanks as 'Live Art'... ever changing... lol.

I may be wrong but I doubt you'd have much reinforcing to do... those stands were solidly built. Only potential problem you might have to find a way to deal with is condensation inside the box... waterproof it well and I think it should be ok.

I have seen a few of these already. They look very cool and become an instant conversation piece in your house. My vote is a very big two thumbs up Yay.

Yippers, Google it, there are some cool ones out there. That was back when wood was wood, so there shouldn't be a prob there - they weigh a TON. They are space hogs though. Sure would be a conversation piece though, I'll give you that. You'd have to name all of the fish after movie stars! Maybe stars from the era even.

Just the screen area.

I would name them all after characters from Casablanca. I would of course make one exception and name one Melody!

Try Gone with the Wind....

Frankly, my dear....

I think I will be offended if you kill off such a respectable fishie as one named Melody. :( You will have to keep replacing her without telling me and I shall believe that it is a 30 year old Swordtail because it suits me to do so.:D

Make her a wild-type, then I can live vicariously through her. ;)

I think that would be absolutely cool! I remember a thread on www.aquaticcentral.com (http://www.aquaticcentral.com) on making a tank out of wood. I will look it up and post a link to it later on.

Yup, that's what I want to do. I'd even wire the lights to the original switch. Thanks for the link.

That is a great thread, brings back memories of when i built my two tanks, 120g and 240g. I wish i had taken more pics. I remember filling my 240g outside on the grass, I had to make sure everything was level, so as not to add any pressure.
Then watching the water rise up the glass, almost holding my breath lol, about 3/4 of the way up it made a few creaks and groans, so i grabbed my 1yr old son at the time and moved him well away:err: , but it never fell apart, just made some settling in noises, Id reccomend if your handy to make a tank, its a lot cheaper than buying one that size, and its very satisfying to know yo built it yourself,
thanks for posting that Ross

I'm always impressed by people who build their own tanks. I'd be afraid that I'd come home to a flood one day. I couldn't deal with the worry that it might actually happen.:wideeyed: I suppose if I had a basement in which to put the tank, I'd likely be braver about taking on the challenge.

LOL it can be a bit of a worry, but when you use a lot of strong glue, and 3" screws, 100,s of them ,you feel mildy secure:wideeyed: , and even more secure when its been up and running for 2yrs. I might add im touching wood as i type this:laugh:

:err: I guess my next worry would be that I might have to deal with some pretty irate neighbours from down below (all 6 suites under mine). :wideeyed:

That's what insurance is for!

 Oh, I have insurance, but the only escape from the irate mob who would be a little more than:POed:banging at my apartment door, is off the balcony (& it's 7 floors to the pavement below  ). :nah: , I think I'll forego to 'build-it-yourself' tank for now.
