Is a licence required now to drive a "pleasure craft"?

They don't call it a license but essentially it is. It's not required for everything yet. It's being phased in gradually. Currently Pleasure Craft Operator Cards (proving you have taken the course and passed the test) are required by anyone who operates any of the following:

powered watercraft under 4m
jet ski or sea-dooAlso anyone born after April 1, 1983 who operates any powered watercraft.

As of September 15, 2009, everybody who operates any kind of watercraft no matter how small or how small the motor is, will be required to have their Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

Full details are on the same site as the exam under the FAQs (http://www.boaterexam.com/canada/faq_rules-en.aspx).

I thought it was important to bump this thread now as although it hasn't warmed up in the Greater Vancouver area, it has elsewhere in Canada and people will be heading out on the water.

Make sure you are licensed, wear approved PFDs and STAY SAFE while on the water.

If you don't have the appropriate license, the time to get it is now... and don't forget to enter for a chance to win.

Now that it's Spring, and the snow is beginning to melt across Canada it's a good time to think about being prepared for the upcoming boating season and make sure you have your Boater's Licence. Note:"All Canadians are now required by federal law to carry a boating license when operating a powered water craft under 4m in length. Those born after April 1, 1983 require a license for any sized water craft. To receive this boat operator license, you must pass a multiple choice exam with a score of at least 75%."
You can take your exam online at http://www.boaterexam.com/canada/. If you register to take the exam you get a chance to win some great prizes. Prizes this year (2009) are:

1st Prize: 1st Prize: Boat, motor, trailer, sonar and PFD.
2nd Prize: A trip for two to Queen Charlotte Lodge
3rd Prize: A day fishing with Bob Izumi
4th Prize: A Bass Pro Shops 100 MPH Gore-Tex Rain Suit

Details here (http://www.boaterexam.com/canada/contest/2009/Default-en.aspx).

Have a safe and fun boating season!
