Most of us at one time or another have tried to figure out where else we can put another aquarium. There is an interesting option of having an aquarium serve a dual purpose of a piece of furniture (ie. a coffee table). A number of places sell these 'table aquariums' and it's a neat idea but I wonder how truly viable it is. For one, unless you can run the wiring under the floor you would have great difficulty hiding the power cords and these also create a tripping hazard. As these are designed more for aesthetics than functionality, I wonder about filtration, heating, lighting, etc.

My concern about this type of aquarium being sold is that little or no thought seems to be incorporated into the actual housing and care of the fish. :wideeyed:

For some insight check out some FAQs here (http://www.customaquarium.com/table_faq.htm). Some of the things they recommend are:

not using a heater because it will fog up the table top
not using aeration because it causes the underside of the the table top to get dirty:wideeyed:

Have any of you actually seen one of these 'table' aquariums set up and running? Are they viable? Even if you haven't, does anyone have ideas on how the needs of the fish are met? Your thoughts.

There are many sites offering these for sale but I've included a couple of links to give you an idea as to what these tanks look like:

I'd hate to see a foot go through that aquarium! EWWW.

Seriously, I think it could work if it were housing "room temp" fish such as white clouds. Honestly though, if somebody would be using a table to house fish, I'd think they'd have the vanity aspect in mind and want tons of colour. I couldn't see somebody settling for "less colourful" and "less" fish.

I think that even if you didn't have a heater there would be condensation on the top piece of glass. I don't think you'd be able to get away from that.

I dunno, I wouldn't want to be the one to try it out.
