Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone could help me out with this question. In the last week or two my brigs and haustrum have been producing clutches at a pretty rapid rate. I decided to try using the plastic bag method and then floating them in hatcheries when they start getting the moldy ready to hatch look. Today I noticed that a few of my clutches look slightly crystalized. Any ideas? I see little dots inside the eggs that I am assuming means they are viable, allthough since some of these are first time clutches I don't expect all of them to be viable. Some of my females are on their 3 and 4th clutches as I type so I'm assuming I'll get some babies brigs in the very least. I spotted some spixi babies today as well. :) :pompom: :Applaud:
Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by crystalized... can you possibly post a picture? I'm thinking they might be eggs that have dried out?... I'm just guessing here. Melody can probably answer this better than I can, but in my experience, either a clutch is fertile or it's not... I don't know if you can have one where only some of the eggs are fertile.
I find that once a few of the Brigs start hatching, I don't wait for the rest. I swish the clutch around in the water and 'help' the other little ones hatch.

They aren't dry, in fact the toweling they are wrapped in is slightly moist. I wondered if they were too wet.
I just went down to take some pictures of the clutches but 3 of my females were laying on the roof of the glass, right in the bend of the seam.. And I'm thinking if I opened it the eggs would get scrambled. :Eeewww: There are 90 billion places for them to lay yet they lay right in the seam of the glass where it bends to open! Gah! I'll have to pull the whole thing off in the morning and take some photo's then. I swear they lay in the most annoying places on purpose! :twitcy:

I told them to do that. You looked like you needed more challenges in your life.

I totally understand your frustration. Brigs, especially with their first clutch, are so picky they will check out every possible location in the tank and still not figure any are suitable and so (if an opening presents itself) will actually leave the tank in search of a better location.:wideeyed: Take heart, however, once they've laid their first clutch they seem much more casual and unconcerned about location... in fact they tend to gravitate to the same location as last time. (so expect more on the bend in the glass!)

I just cut a piece of styrofoam out that I'm going to attach to the underside of the hood at night! I'll fix them! Yeah I fixed them allright, I'll be vacuuming up pieces of styrofoam for the next week or so! :wideeyed:

The words 'cut' and 'styrofoam' should not be used in the same sentence. ... that is unless you want little bits of styrofoam sticking to everything forever and a day.
