I finally got my pond set up over the weekend. It is far from complete (as I don't yet have any large water lettuce nor have any fish been added). We do have a thread for Canadian Pond Pic's (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1068) (to post pics of ponds from across Canada).

However, I thought we also ought to have an in depth thread about members' ponds. Post pics here of your pond and tell us a little about it: size, type, location, plant species, occupants, lighting, aeration/filtration, rocks, etc.

And so, I'll start it off my mine:

http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/jb_images/pond-may2007.jpg

Pond: 6g plastic pot
Location: apartment balcony
Lighting: morning sun
Plants: water hyacinth, hygrogyza aristata, duckweed
Filtration: Rio 90 Aqua Pump with a sponge over the intake (for filtration) and fountain attachment
Rocks: aquarium gravel, tufa rock, Texas holey rock
Occupants: Marisa snails

That's awesome Jay! I wish I could have a pond! Unfortunately the racoons are so large here they walk around upright with their knuckles dragging behind them.

Raccoons are notorious for their ingenious methods of getting past whatever deterrents we put in their way to get at food. A pond=buffet dinner to them. However, if you could figure out a way to have a 'tub' pond like mine and some way to secure a lid on it at night (which the raccoons couldn't open)... you could have one. Other members might have ways they have ingeniously thwarted raccoon dining at their ponds.

LOL... that's one more fish than is in mine at the moment. I look forward to the pictures.

It's such a beautiful pond! I know absolutely nothing about hibiscus. Are they fairly hearty. What conditions do they like best?

Also, I'm going to be a royal pain in the butt and ask you if you know the names of the other plants surrounding the pond. (if you don't, that's ok... if it were me, I wouldn't have any idea... I'm the 'clueless wonder' when it comes to plants)

What type of pump and filter do you have in there?

And for those who haven't seen the pond in person, rough dimensions?

I've loved that pond from the first pic I saw of it. You & yours do a beautiful job with it. The container pond looks great too... gotta do that one of these days.

Awsome Ponds guys! I will post some pics of mine later.

Just to answer some stuff about hibiscus (my favorite plant),
-It is only an annual here, it can't survive our winters
-it is hardy, but is very intolerant of frost and temperatures below 60F
-needs to be dug up and brought in for the winter.

There "hardy hibiscus plants" out there. Look almost as nice.

As for plants surrounding her pond. I see hostas, ferns, and a big daylilly.

thanks for that info WaterPond!!!
i was going to say that about the Hibicus (also my fave!)
we were thinking of digging the pot down so we can bring the whole pot in in the winter.
Which is the big day lilly?! I don't know plant names very well, i know - ooh that orange one or the curly looking green one etc.
I do know the little plants on the left are sprouting cala lillies and there were cana lillies at the very back but they didn't grow back this year  They were my fave last year. I don't know what the tree is called but i like it a lot and the deadish curly leafed plant in the pond will be replaced soon - we just don't want to take the cover away from the lone fishy ( i think he needs a name ) lone fishy is just sad.
There's also horse hair grass? i think that's what it's called...anyway it does really well around the pond.

Oh...and the pump/filter is a Laguna Max-Flo 2000, i'm not sure of the dimesions of the pond though, i used to know, maybe i'll measure one of these days.

Fishykisses,

Thats what i do with hibiscus, its a good idea. Make sure you have a fairly large pot though.

The daylilly is the ones at the back, the very green ones (not blueish or white like the others). Its directly under that metal thing hanging on the fence.

Canna lillies didn't come back because their bulbs need to be dug up before winter every year, then re-planted in spring. Calla lillies are the same. I think you just got lucky with those

And for the fish name... Pokie... Short for PolkaDots, oh god, i'm so lame.

my cala lillies have come back every year, this is year 3 or 4..i can't seem to kill the cala's if i tried - not that i have, i really like lillies. That's good to know though! Thanks!

Hey Jay

where did you get the 6 gallon bucket? I want to make a pond like yours.

CACAdmin
Jun 2nd 2007, 12:31 PM
It's actually a plastic flower pot with no drainage holes. It took me ages to find one last year because everything I liked and was the right size was meant to be an actual flower pot with holes for drainage...lol. If I remember correctly, it was at Home Depot... it could have been Canadian Tire but I don't think so. As you can see it's a Hex shape and it does taper a lot... hence only 6 gallons... If you got something a different shape it could hold more. The measurements at the top of mine from outside edge to outside edge at 17" x 17". Hope that helps.

I was having the same trouble finding smeting without drainage holes! I guess i should go check out home depot thanks :)

I'm trying to remember which Home Depot... I think it might have been the Richmond one. Anyway, they were stacked on shelves... not located with the ceramic plant pots, if that helps... however, where they put them each year I'm sure varies dependant upon what they carry. If I spot one or something similar, I'll let you know.

Nice ponds everyone. Mine is finally ready. But it is raining today, so no pics yet. Have plants coming for it and will be adding some H. Furmosas as soon as the weather here is stable.

I just want to put dibs on a chair by the pond on your deck... great place to sit and back and relax (glass of wine in hand)..

Jay I'll have the chair set up right beside it and a glass of wine for you when you get here.

You could hide him at my house with all the fish I plan to hide in the basement. :;): Then Melody would HAVE to come to Ontario to get him.

LOL Well I used to come through Ontario on my way to NB all the time, but I haven't been down there in awhile. I have a Brother in Ontario too. I'd tell you where but something tells me he wouldn't like finding a cowboy with a horse & fish on his doorstep.

Water lettuce and a cana lily. Our local pond guy says they can be grown in a pond. So far that's it. Pm'd you.
