Well they're not the greatest, but I finally got a few half decent shots of one population. They are about three months old.
Youngest male, just starting to get some color:

Dominant male - starting to color up nicely:

This shot is too dark, obviously, but it shows how those metalic flecks pick up the light:

Now were you to take some of these home, you'd say "Shame on you Melody! You colored those fishies up in Photoshop!" LOL The lighting/flash is what brings out their sheen of colors. If they were in a dim tank, they'd look mostly greyish in the body. Their fins have definite color - mostly shades of orange & sky blue that will become more vivid as they age. The dorsal has an orange line on the outer rim. The lower head is a deep bronze.
These fish will be 5-6", with the females being largest. The females in this population have a more subtle mauve hue as well.

Thanks for your kind words:smile: . I love Sailfins. I didn't keep any pairs of that population. Blaine has more species than I do and I brought them in - that's just not fair:POed:.
I think you both should come over and turn my livingroom into a fishroom. :D
P.S. One of my friends has your Xiph Xiphidiums and I didn't even know it...lol....should be able to score some next trip.

I am looking at the P. Latipinna in my tank as we speak and I do see those metallic flakes when the lights hit it just right. His tail is amzing as well. In fact he looks a lot like the male in your picture... maybe they are related ?
Did I mention I have 6 baby sailfins in my tank right now? If you want a pair I am sure I can arrange it .
Beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing.

I took them before I sent any out to Blaine or you, so it could very well be your fishies :D .
I'm contenting myself with crossing everything into the Velifera line and I have the Kykesis. There's all sorts of babies in the Kykesis tank but I have them with other fishies so I'm not sure if they're Kykesis or not yet. Some have the right coloring.
Maybe if you get too many females I could get one to keep Mr. Stud Velifera even more busy. He has 4 or 5 various species/varieties in with him now. When that sail goes up I swear I can hear the same sound as a sailboat sail makes when it goes up and the wind catches it.
Oooor I could need to get out more....

Never look through Aqualog's All Livebearers and Halfbeaks. My favorite Livebearers turned into a list a mile long on the day I got that book.
But yes, I virtually smucked him in the shoulder and demanded to know why he hadn't mentioned that before. It appears that he doesn't feel the need to report his fishroom occupants to me at all  . I want to get some more Nezzie Swordtails from him next time anyway, among other things, so hopefully he'll have some available then.
He's also into the Halfbeaks - vicious creatures.

the livebearer and halfbeaks aqualog is the next aqualog i am heavily favoring to get.. only a matter of time.. maybe i should put that on my gift registry for my wedding.. lol..
anyways.. I have always been a fan of all the wild kinds of swords too.. nezzies would be a neat grab. I am still kicking myself for not getting monty's when i had the chnace here.
I have yet to explore the waters of halfbeaks.. those would be interesting to ry one day too.
so many fish.. so little tanks..

I've had the Nezzies for quite some time now, but I haven't done well with them at all. Finally figured it out it seems - I was keeping the tank too warm. They like it cool with lots of water movement. I lost all but one pregnant female and she's doing well so hopefully I'll get some babies, but I'll be getting more regardless.
I am getting the Monty's in but I'll only get them from one source so I don't know when that will be. Too many people have heavily inbred their lines so I don't want to buy on the normal private level. I'll be getting mine from the Xiph Research Centre. The reason I won't be doing it right away is because they're expensive and I want A LOT of the fish they breed....lol.

well keep me posted.. I am always interested in hearing what others are getting in.. almost as much as me getting new fish.
what temps do you keep the nezzies at that they are happy with???
and to finish it off.. what is the Xiph Research Centre?? I have never heard of that one before.. you must have some great connections to be buying direct from sources like that. :notworthy:

They prefer the lowish 70's - I had them at 80 because they were in with other fish  .

That's because I always get the name wrong....lol...Its the Xiph. Genetic Stock Centre (http://www.xiphophorus.org/xgsc.htm). They use the fish for research and have really helped cancer research, among other things. The lines have to be kept pure or they're no good for genetic research so its the ultimate source, especially when it comes to lines frequently crossed, like Platy's, Helleri Swordtails, etc. If you're going to find a pure strain that has been properly bred, you're going to find it there.
Don't let the name make them sound like people torturing fish - they're very much into fish and some of the powers that be are members of the American Livebearer Assoc.
you must have some great connections to be buying direct from sources like that.
I guess so.... I just make friends easily and try to treat them as well as they treat me. Probably the fact that I've been into Livebearers for so many years more than anything else. Nothing impressive or profound ;) .
