Besides the Cherry shrimp, which other shrimp will breed in the aquarium? And how do you keep them alive? Wouldnt the fish eat them right away?

Same with snails - are there any snails which are easy to breed?

Thanks!!!!!!

Fish will eat shrimp if they can find them and they fit into their mouth. Lotsa plants will help in that respect. They like the fine-leaved varieties such as Java Moss & Hornwort.

All of the common snails breed relatively easily, from MTS to Applesnails. The only difficult one commonly seen on the market, are Nerites.

you have all kind of freshwater shrimp who breed in aquarium.
more species than you think :

you have 3 type of shrimp :
- the one who have larva who need salt water to develop
ie: japonica

- the one who have larva but dont need salt water to develop
ie : ghost (most of them)

- the one who have baby shrimp directly
ie : cherry shrimp.

in the third category you have a bunch of specie (tiger, bee, cherry, crs, bumblebee, green, yellow, black, indian zebra etc.......)
in the first category you can still breed them you just need more effort and more knowledgement.

for the snail part i will let somedy else answer
hope i answer you question

Snails are way easy to breed....I am up to my eyeballs in brigs, spixis and haustrums. But I have noticed one thing about snails and shrimp. My cana ate my cherry shrimp, the water params were fine in this tank, they are spoiled rotten and fed plenty of food so it wasn't out of desperation. I couldn't figure out where my cherries were going until I actually saw my cana cruise up right next to the unsuspecting cherry latch on and eat it! Meanwhile I had a devil of a time catching the shrimp to move em...I'm not sure if he would have eaten the ghosts that were also in there but I didn't give him an opportunity and removed the remaining shrimp to a different tank. Odd huh?

wow first time i heard that
your shrimp must be lazy , to nt run from the snails.
i have cana , and they dont touch the cherry.

I have absolutely no idea, I kept both cherries and amano shrimp in said tank. The amano's were and still are fine, the cherries I can only assume were picked off from the cana. It was the one and only time I saw the cana do it so again I'm assuming. My cana is also the size of a baseball and is pretty zippy for his size but I'm not entirely sure about the other five. :Dunno: Now I have all of my amano shrimp with a few cories and a few baby spixi's and all seem to be well. I've since gone out and purchased other cherries which are alive and kicking and stealing all of the poor corys food at the moment.

Since this incident said evil Cana has been renamed Hannibal.

I suppose they would get used to the snails and feel they weren't a threat. Good to know anyway!

Some of the most interesting shrimp info I've come across is that of Dusko, a member on aquahobby (another board I lurk in frequently). Here's his blog:

Good articles and incredible photos...he even manages pics of diatom algae. Blows my mind.

feeding is the most dangerous thing for a shrimp, because most of the hobbist over feed
if you keep that in mind i will explain some small fact , so you can give your shrimp the best.

first of all any kind of non naturel boiled food have to disapear in an hour os so if not your are over feeding.

Now let me explain you the diet of the shrimp.
i personnally put the shrimpmin the opportunist group.
that's mean the shrimp will eat anything eatable they can found , after that , they are scavenger, and hunter (sort of).
shrimp are eating microorganism everywhere in the tank , ok they love the algae also but dont forget they will anything.

so your goal is to make a tank with lot of naturel food so your shrimp can have lot of fun .
the only things you will give them as food will complement like , algae wafer, spiruline , boiled vegetable, frozen blood worm, frozen brineshrimp etc....

so what is the naturel thing you can add to the tank and who will not foul your water :
- dry leaf
- plant
- sponge filter
- natural sponge
- etc....

and dont forget diversity is the main word , they protein, vegetable, vitamin , all the good stuff , so the best thing is to add diversity
hope it is more clear now

Zapisto, I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to copy your reply into the Nutrition section and start a thread about Shrimp nutrition. I certainly have a lot to learn about that and I'm sure others will also find it useful. Thanks for your contribution!

Thank you so much Zapisto! That is awesome information! So when you say Dry leaf do I just go into the backyard and get a leaf from a tree? Do I need to do anything to it before putting it in the tank besides rinsing it off?

Also in the tank I have a few cories, I have been noticing my shrimp population going down - today I saw two of the cories going crazy eating two shrimp!! Do they usually eat shrimp? Or would the shrimp have been dead already? I was told Corys were 100% Safe with shrimp. And they get fed lots of yummy foods so it's not like they are starving!

Thank you again!!!

when i say dry leaf , i mean leaf who will not hurt the shrimp .
here is what i test : oak leaves, almond leaves , magnolia leaves....
the leaves have to fall by themself dry, dont get green leaves and make them dry.
i put my leaves in a bucket for a week or so, when they sink, then i use them in my tanks.

Also in the tank I have a few cories, I have been noticing my shrimp population going down - today I saw two of the cories going crazy eating two shrimp!! Do they usually eat shrimp?

some people say cory is good tankmate for shrimp , personnally i did not try yet except with japonica and ghost shrimp.
but cory should be safe whit adult but i think sometime some species can take the young as lunch (like they do with their own baby)

Or would the shrimp have been dead already?

can be also .

I was told Corys were 100% Safe with shrimp. And they get fed lots of yummy foods so it's not like they are starving!

Thank you again!!!
i try to not put anyfish in my dwarf shrimp tanks.
