Just wondering how everyone spent Canada Day this year. My sister and I went to Spanish Banks and walked the beach at low tide. We got a chance to take in a Canada Day Parade on the water - of Canada Geese.

I got up at O dark 30 and went fishing with a buddy. We caught 4 rainbows between the 2 of us. Ranging from 2 - 11 lbs. Drank a few celebretory beers when we got back and BBQ'd. Over all a great Canada DAy

Next time, I'm spending the day with Sailor, fishing in the dark and drinking celebratory beer. I did manage to toss a few back as I cleaned, but it was so long between drinks that I never did get that happy Canadian feeling.

Mini family reunion. Read stuff, did fish stuff, plant stuff, walked the dogginses :) Drank parent's booze and relaxed too much apparently, I couldn't get to sleep monday night. So I went from too relaxed to bleary eyed tired in 12 hours, oops :(

Like all Quebecers do on July 1st, I moved!! :err:
I've lived in BC for so many years now that I had forgotten all about moving day being July 1st. For those of you who don't know it... July 1st is when all leases are up in Quebec and everybody moves on that one day... it's insane!

That sounds insane, what could possibly be the point of that??

Learn something new everyday.

You could be in the moving business for exactly one day.

From what I've heard, a long time ago...

French settlers were renting farmland from landlords. It was agreed upon that the landlords could not end the rents before may 1st, as to let the settlers find a new place, if it was the case, in some warm temperatures. They could not kick them out in the dead of winter!

Later on, it was moved to july 1st as to let their kids finish their school year at the same school they started!

The tradition continues even today, but more and more people are starting to move in may or july when they can, as to avoid the massive price hikes on rental trucks or movers (600% for trucks, 300-500$ for a team of movers) during the moving season!

Certainly seems like an exploited law that is no longer necessary. Time to contact your MLA!

It's not a law anymore, to my knowledge, but it's always on the 1st of july. Not much of a choice, as the tradition continues!
The only way to change this would be trying to find another place to live that would be ready anyother time than the 1st of july.

Interesting, thanks for the wee history lesson
I was expecting the part about the moving trucks, nothing like commercial exploitation of tradition:no:Though to be honest, if I were renting them, I'd do it too...

Especially if you had to make up for lost income because hardly anybody moves at any other time.
