World's First Manta Ray Born in Captivity (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,283493,00.html)

After being pregnant for 374 days, a mama giant manta ray at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium gave birth to a baby more than 6 feet in width according to the aquarium. Sadly, the baby died after only 4 1/2 days.:( It is thought that its death was the result of injuries sustained from the father. Baby Manta Ray at Japan Aquarium Dies (http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Jun21/0,4670,JapanBabyManta,00.html).

So little is known about these creatures that I guess they did not expect attacks on the baby by the father or I would imagine they would have planned to have kept the female and her baby separate. A difficult lesson to learn... so sad to have lost the little one.

What a shame. I can't believe the pregnancy takes over a year.
