View Full Version : Marisas laying non-stop

My marisas have been laying clutches on almost a daily basis... and as I don't need or want a zillion more baby marisas wandering around I have been removing and destroying the clutches with the same frequency. Now of course, my brigs from whom I wouldn't mind having another clutch (especially to add to colors on which I am low) haven't laid a clutch in ages. Murphy's Law! :twitcy:

is this a seasonal thing? Is it the heat, maybe? What about everyone else's snails... which ones are laying right now and which ones aren't?

Mine are not laying too muchirght now. but last summer I was over run with babies just from the clutches I did not find.
My spixis are on a role though.

They absolutely love the pond... they lay in there about 5 times as much or more as in a tank! Even when I find all clutches, occasionally a few eggs get left behind (slippery little devils they are) and so I always have babies  ... I just have to be vigilant to try to keep the numbers down.

Do you have any snails in your pond? If so, which ones?

Pamelajo

I have not put any out there. I have goldfish in there for now and was not sure they would leave them alone. I wanted to do a trial run this year and then next year will put in my minnows and h furmosa. Not sure if there are any critters here that might help themselves to my fish. So far so good.
By the way do you need any goldfish come fall??

Jul 16th 2007, 12:21 PM
My hets are doing really well in the pond. Come fall, I bring my hets and snails indoors and never thought about maintaining the pond over the winter. I think it's probably too small to stay warm enough even for goldfish... although they seem to do ok in larger ponds here. So thanks, I think I'll pass on the goldfish.

My brigs are starting to slow down I only had 4 this morning lol. Spixis are laying as well. My haustrums however laid one stinking weensy clutch so far all summer.

Oh well, summer's not over yet. And don't worry, the minute you decide you'd rather the haustrums not lay... you'll have more clutches than you know what to do with!

I'm telling you snails are much smarter/sneakier then people realize. I have these teeny tiny babies crawling around in a tank that *shouldn't* have any babies. :nah:

And the spixi's, they are devious little things, spixi babies running amok.

how long they take to get to adult size ?

Melody
Jul 16th 2007, 07:55 PM
Moving them to another tank can set them off, or pond as the case may be. Haustrums seem to be inspired by Parsley. But yes, it is seasonal to a point and Summer is the Season. They lay in other seasons too, but really take off when the warmth hits. My Brig's are being lazy again.

Depends on the temp's & food supply, but they can be breeding by the time they're the size of a quarter... averages around three months I think.

I had Goldfish before I knew about Goldfish, waaaaaaaaayyyy back in the beginning. I put three commons in a 10G tank, very pretty commons mind you. One was all white with a red cap even. Man did that clerk love trying to catch what I picked out of a tank of a zillion feeder Goldfish.

Anyways, the things ate like royalty and had daily waterchanges after I found out that a 10G was way too small. I was holding onto them until Spring, at which time I took them to a store. They were something like 4" long, can't remember exactly, but still quite small. They started spawning! First thing in the morning, two males & a female. Poor female got driven hard. I had fry & everything.

Why? Because I couldn't house Goldfish, that's why. So start saying that there's no room for Goldfish in the new house, and how you'd prefer another Livebearer tank, etc etc etc. Should be overrun with Goldfish by Fall.

My doorstep isn't big enough for those though...lol. I still like them, but as I always say, if I can't keep them well, I don't want to keep them at all.:NoWay:

Not only if you can get it, but better check if the snails (and your other aquatic creatures) approve of it... for heaven's sake they wouldn't want you to have to have to downsize their living quarters.

Oh no problem the man builds race bikes for a living there is some sort of drill that everyone was drooling over..It was worth something like 5 grand, the huzbo was DROOLING OVER IT...I guess he'll miss it when I sell it for a 300 gallon... The workshop will be the perfect fish room he he he...The counters are a lil high for tank height but I'll live. The poor huzbo has such high hopes for a workshop its gonna be sad crushing his dream like that. he he he I'll just start out slowly you know with about 12 tanks. And the yard has a Koi pond! Gah! The snails would be in heaven in the summer. I already told the real estate agent to stop showing people MY house. :;):

Oh he's aware kinda I'm sure...The minute I got into the basement he said, 'I know that look you're scheming'. Plus he's away for 2 weeks in Ottawa for work, this thread WILL be buried by then. They sent the poor guy to teach a course with a broken pelvis. Besides a little birdy said they'd ban him for me if need be. he he he

Now you didn't have anything to do with arranging that did you? (poor guy can't even suffer in peace! )

Back to the topic at hand, I find that my brigs tend to start laying when moved (as Melody mentioned) and when I feed them broccoli. I tried broccoli last night so we'll see what happens. (My marisas don't seem to need any encouragement at the moment. )

And so it continues with my Marisas... :err: the more clutches I remove the more they lay... they are determined to get the upper hand.

To destroy unwanted clutches, I remove them right away and place them in a ziploc bag and into the freezer they go. (Well a few eggs always escape me but this way I can at least control the population of marisas).

However, last week I had a hand from an unsuspected source: birds (or a bird... I'm not sure). I had just removed about 5 clutches from the pond, scooping them into an ice cream bucket. I went indoors to get a ziploc bag, and got distracted. About an hour later I remembered the eggs, went outside and they were all gone! :wideeyed: ... just a few drips of water remaining in the bucket. The only explanation (in that I live 7 stories up in a hi-rise apt.) is that a bird or birds came and dined on them. They must have been tasty as not one egg was left...lol.

You know I was just sitting here thinking to myself.....Self what are you going to ship the baby snails in? Since I just tossed a ton of boxes and containers in a psychotic cleaning episode...Yep I'm an idjit!

But ice cream containers you say??? Hmmmm I'll have to pop out and get some, being I NEED the containers I'll just have to eat the ice cream suffer as I may I'm a trooper and will work through it. Thanks for the idea, sorry your surrounded...

I just got 4 marisas from Pam....Yikes...

lol Well if its any comfort, my Marisas still pause in their laying when they feel like it.

I valiantly eat through bucket after bucket of Safeway Dutch Chocolate icecream, for the sake of my fishies. Being such a selfless martyr of a hobbyist, I recruit the kid and we eat through extras for Jay too.

Those buckets are used on a regular basis too - acclimating fish, netting a bunch from one tank to take to another across the room... you name it. When I get big shipments of wild-type Livebearers, I label them before the shipment arrives so I can acclimate them separately as some of them look much alike, especially females.

Lots of uses for those calories!

Thanks to Melody's and her kid's valiant efforts in the ice cream eating department, I have ice cream buckets for multiple 'fishy' and snail uses.(Thanks Melody! :Flowers3: ) My baby snails begin their growth in a small cottage cheese container and then graduate to an ice cream bucket.

I too use buckets to transfer fish from one tank to another. Also I have used one temporarily in a pinch with an airstone to quarantine a sick fish, too. Lots of uses. Keep up the good work, Melody. A couple of my buckets have developed cracks and will need replacing some time soon. :;):

Oh, I hear you on that score. You should see me squinting to see whether silverish colored fry are green mollies, or older limia tridens or nezzies (I could probably tell if they'd stop moving for at least 2 or 3 seconds.:twitcy: )

OK so I admit I eat ice cream too! I just don't buy the buckets. I head across the street to Anny's where they serve what's called a Maple Twist which I have in a waffle cone. It's soft ice cream (the good rich kind) and swirled within it is lots of real maple butter. Yummm!

Waaaaaay :offtopic:. lol Anny herself is a BC import (from Quebec) and for the past couple of years has also been introducing folks around here to 'steamies' and real Montreal smoked meat sandwiches (which she brings in from Montreal)... and Montreal style fries.

Back to the topic at hand (marisas clutches), 4 more clutches today... I think the only way to make them stop laying is if I beg them to lay more.

I see the Spixies have picked up the pace - spotted a few clutches today. I changed the filtration - increased and an HOB rather than the internal box filters. I guess that's all it took.

One of my brigs is laying a clutch for you right now Melody lol. I'm pretty sure you'll have enough to share, another reason I wanted to wait a few more days 2 of my haustrums momma's (red strain) are checking out the tops so I'm hoping anyday to get a whalloping clutch, so far I got very one small one at the beginning of the summer. If they so much as see's me when they are about to lay they both drop down. Meanwhile the brigs are shamless and could care less who's watching. Hopefully the new additions I send will get the new blood going as well.

If you produce cool olive babies though I want some! Allthought amidst the chaos I probally have some but who knows.

Melody
Jul 22nd 2007, 11:24 PM
The Olives will be part of a special tank, which should result in Light Olives, Dark Olives, Better Jades and with any luck at all, the elusive red. All clutches & babies from that tank are kept separate so I know who they came from - when they're small its easy to miss Olives.

I just moved a bunch of misc. Brig's out of my baby tanks that have been in there far too long. Time to bump my ad I guess...lol...I haven't had time to move them. I see I also have a bunch of the Striped Mocha MTS to move out. They didn't breed as fast as the others for me before, so I haven't looked too closely, but I'm noticing them piled on top of the food now so its time. The Red Rams are due for a thinning as well.

That's the weird thing he's in a barebottom tank, I must have missed him when I gave away all of my others. I have a feeling he's not too happy in the barebottom, I could have missed more I guess but I was shining a spot light do-ma-hickey in the tank after I found him and didn't find any others.

I have to keep looking at the articles to know what you are talking about! Good thing they are there or I would be lost in this thread. There are so many interesting snails now. Before only marine snails had variety. How many snails come from each egg bunch?

CACAdmin
Jul 23rd 2007, 12:28 PM
P. Bridgesii clutches according to Applesnail.net range 200 - 600 eggs. I think mine seem to be in the 100 range. (I don't tend to count.) As for marisa snails, I don't know what the average is supposed to be but mine usually seem to lay clutches of a couple of dozen eggs each.

As for the others, as I don't breed them, I'm not sure. However, I'm sure one of our resident breeders will be able to provide that info.
