Such amazing finds in our oceans! These coelacanths are such an intriguing species to have lived so long ago and still exist today (given that we once thought they were extinct). A fossil found in Australia in the 1970's was dated at 400 million years old! http://www.vanaqua.org/aquanew/fullnews.php?id=2094
I am not sure the status of the research project (I will try to find out) but Dr. Ribbink, the Programme Manager for the African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme (ACEP), visited the Vancouver Aquarium in October of 2006 to discuss his plans to tag and track live coelancanths to learn more about them. Story here (http://www.vanaqua.org/aquanew/fullnews.php?id=1746) included a lot of information about the strange creatures.

A fascinating fact for all of you...Latimeria chalumnae (and Latimeria menadoensis ) are livebearers.
The new find is significant, as it means that the population and range is even greater than we had thought.
