Here's an intriguing concept I came across. It's for you die-hard DIYs who have lots of time on their hands. It's how to build an Aquarium Water Bridge, so that your fish have a bridge to swim through between tanks.

Here's the link with pictures and instructions on 'how to' create one: http://www.bio-elite.com/waterbridge.htm

My concerns would be that you'd want the largest size PVC pipe possible, being vigilant in maintaining the water level and water changes could prove challenging.

It would be neat to have a tank on either side of my desk with the bridge running over the desk so I could watch the fish in transit. Might not get any work done, however.

You should connect ALL the 15G tanks in your condo with water bridges!!!!!

Which could also read: "There's DIY and then there's Melody" . I think I just edited my dream rec room set-up.

I was thinking about doing this with the twin 33 hex tanks I had. However, upon more reading and studying, I found that if you had a power outage, the water in the bridge, will flow into one tank and start a flood. Plus, since you have your intake in one tank..and your output in another to cause a flow from one tank to another...the risk of having your one tank back flow into the other...and onto the floor is just a wee bit too risky for me. Not to mention that finding clear PVC pipe in four plus inch diam...is hard. and expensive. Don't even think about buying clearn 90 degree elbows..they are around three hundred bucks US.....

No problem... just win the lottery! ;) Then you can afford all the necessary supplies regardless of cost and a huge UPS in case of power failure.

Not true Melody, and I am saddened that you think this:cry:

Accually, the more power to someone whom tries this, and if it works, belive me I will be next in line to build it...cause whoooooooooboy it would look good if I could find anouther big hex and a bridge between them... over the mantal of my fire place..

swooon..drool, dream...

Thanks for bringing the thread back to life. A great number of members have joined since then and may not have had a chance to see it.

Are you having thoughts on trying to create something like this?

I couldn't right now, too much going on; but it is cool.

I really think it is neat but would have to have it run over the dining room table to reach the other tank.

Over the dining room table? Not the best idea should it spring a leak. :wideeyed: Somehow, I don't think your dinner guests would be impressed. :nah:

I made one of these for about $5. You need two pvc elbows, three clear water bottles (slightly larger diameter than pvc elbows), two wide rubber bands, silicon, and a lighter.
1. cut the ends off the bottles
2. put silicon on the rubber bands and put them on the pvc elbows
3. connect the water bottles to the pvc by sliding the water bottle over the end and heat with the lighter until it shrinks, rotating to get it even.

That's it!
To connect the tanks they have to be side by side, and at the same height. Submerge the bridge in water and make sure there is no air. Put plastic bags over the ends and hold them on tightly to keep the water in. Put each end in the tanks and remove the bags. Boom. Done. You could make them longer by using alternating water bottles with pvc pipe in horizontal part, but you'd have to support the pipe.

I wasn't able to access the link posted at the beginning of this thread (too old?), but I looked it up and was able to find this example on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brJ_uu-keUI&NR=1&feature=endscreen

In the first link above, the aquarium owner is explaining it all but you don't actually get to see a fish going through. In the following link, the person used a motion detector on his webcam to get footage of a fish going through: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmM8yaQnsYM&feature=related

Cool idea!
