View Full Version : How Does Your Garden Grow?

I have mostly herbs growing due to a lack of space, which I use to feed the creatures. I've already harvested Dill. I guess enough of my herbs are natural insect repellants, because I haven't seen pests eating anything.

Does anyone else grow food for their fish/inverts/etc? Are you doing ok without pesticides? Any natural/non-harmful pesticides that you can suggest for those who need them?

I grow curley parsley, dill, green beans and dandelions for the snails. The little land snails seem to really appreciate it as well. You have to see the odd looks I get from growing dandelions. I grow them in my yard in a planter box that I made out of rail road posts. I don't bother with pesticides, I just grow enough for my critters and the outdoor critters as well.

Just don't let those dandelions go to seed or you'll need to seek refuge from irate neighbors at your door when dandelions start popping up in their lawns.:wideeyed:

Headless dandelions, eh? No wonder passers-by look at you strangely. I'm sure they're dying to know but are afraid to ask. And probably a good thing. They'd only be more confused to learn you grow them for your snails.

You had to see the look I got from a neighbor who asked me about my greenhouse. He said WOW! Look at all those herbs you must really like to cook. (I gave him some oregano) I said I do like to cook but most of this stuff is grown for my snails and fish. He didn't believe me until he saw the basement. Now I'm the weird chick who has like 100 tanks in my basement according to another neighbor who is a friend. I said 100 tanks I wish, I only have 12 in the basement! Apparently that's not very normal either.

Anything above 2 tanks and people look at you like you're some kind of freak from a far away galaxy!!

I've been trying to grow some peas for my fish, but I always forget to water them outside, so most of the plants are dying off.

The squirrels eat all of my pea plants, so I've given up on them.

I only feed them the peas and zuccini because we always have so much. I want to try more herbs next year.

I grow dandelions too. If it weren't for them, I'd have no lawn at all.

LMAO

I don't grow anything for my fish, such deprived little buggers. I usually will just give them like frozen peas, and spinach, you know, the stuff that you buy, then stick it in the freezer, and it sits there forever and you never eat it because you don;t like it and you wonder why you bought it in the first place.

ROFL If there is one thing that I've learned about your tanks, its that no creature in them even knows what 'deprived' is, unless they learned it from their previous owner.

How are the gardens coming along? Our weather has been horrible so mine is barely moving but I should see a big change soon (optomist).

Have you harvested anything for the creatures yet? Growing anything yummy for them? I knew I was addicted when I started growing stuff that I don't even like  .
