View Full Version : Uncle Rick's Food

I'm all excited about trying Uncle Rick's food, so I decided to start the 'opinion' thread early....lol. I know he has shipped to other Canadians too, so feel free to chime in. Our contest winners will be receiving big sampler packs so they can add to the thread as well once they receive it.
I purchased the 'Better Than Brine' food and will also be trying samples of the other foods. I paid for it so I could reassure people that its an unbiased opinion - free food always tastes better...lol. Uncle Rick has sponsored the site's contest of course, but you don't have to know me long to realize that if I have something negative to say, I'll say it no matter who it is. Regardless, I am also hoping for other opinions so it should end up being a well-rounded 'review' thread. I already know several people in the US who love the stuff, hence me tracking poor Uncle Rick down in the first place. His Aquabid feedback today is 448/448, so he's doing something right.
I think what I like most about these foods is that they fill a niche - they're formulated for specific needs that aren't always easy to fill from the store shelves. Its apparent that he has put a lot of thought into what he'll sell.
Now on to the point, here is some info on the food that Uncle Rick sells:
:tropicalfish: Better Than Brine: This food comes in both Egglayer and Livebearer fry varieties, as well as a larger size for conditioning fish (4 sizes in total). It mimics swimming food in the tank. I believe he said its encapsulated. It is made with Brine Shrimp concentrate, marine fish meals, algae, etc, with added antioxidants, vitamins & minerals. Uncle Rick says this stuff is 20 times more nutritious than regular Baby Brine Shrimp. 50-60% protein, 18-20% lipids, 10-14% carbohydrates.
:tropicalfish: Gel Food: I didn't look at this one closely until now and I wish I had because I would have ordered it. This is a gel that you mix up yourself, so you can add all sorts of goodies, plus it is a food on its own. Crude protein not less than 38.0% Crude fat not less than 10.0% Crude fiber not more than 4.0% Ash not more than 16.0% Phosphorus not less than 1.1% Added minerals not more than 4.0%.
:tropicalfish: All Natural Sea Veggies: Y'all know how big I am on sea veggies! I'll be ordering this eventually, I just didn't need any right now. 100% natural cold water micro~macro algae - a select combination of dulse, laver, alaria, kelp, and sushi grade sheets.
:tropicalfish: Pleco Chews: 100% natural, soft fiber tubes made from the Teddy Bear Cactus. For Plecos, Hermit Crabs, etc.
:tropicalfish: Pro-Gro: Stage 2 food designed to contain all the vitamins, minerals, and trace elements necessary for growth and color. Comes in three sizes for small to large fish, which he'll mix & match for you if you want him to. High oil value fishmeal, algae, krill, salmon meal, spirulina, yeast, vitamins, minerals & antioxidants.
Is it here yet? :;): Click here (http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?disp&viewseller&Unclerick666) to check out Uncle Rick's auctions & get some more info.

Oh dear, Melody, you sure do a great job with finding all these foods. And I feel completely comfortable with any that you recommend. Now if we could just get some over here on the Island. I guess I shall have to start bugging the LFS.
Off to read about Uncle Rick now.

Uncle Rick ships here and the shipping really isn't bad, especially since you can ship by ground. When you're buying pounds at a time, it lasts forever and the savings in prices more than make up for the shipping when it comes to private foods.
I haven't recommended it yet...lol...but a lot of people sure do!

Melody, if buying in bulk, can you freeze flake food to keep it fresh longer? Or will it get damp from freezing?
Melody
Jul 28th 2007, 07:53 PM
I seal it in air-tight containers and freeze it, then I refill cans that I've saved from store food and keep that in the fridge. Freezing actually takes moisture out of food, hence 'freezer burn'.

I think its all sold by the pound, except for the Better Than Brine... I think that's sold by the quarter pound but don't quote me on that. Send him a message - he's a friendly guy, and tell him you heard about him here if you don't mind. Gotta keep those contest sponsors feeling generous so we have lots of great prizes!

I think the only thing he didn't include samples of is the Pleco Chews because he is sold out (even had to sell some of his personal stock!). So hopefully we'll find some vegies in that box ::D: .

Its heeeere! That didn't take very long!
I fed the Black Gold tonight, small pellets. It sinks super-fast so I had to take my time feeding it.
They seem to like it. The little ones can't handle it so I had to feed the pellets first and then sprinkle a few flakes over the plants, but I do that with Dainichi too. I have to admit that I'm a little nervous about pellets since I had a bad experience with that form of food before, but I've since fed Dainichi so I'm hoping all will be well. I'll be watching how they digest it very carefully.
The Better Than Brine is REALLY finely ground, so I'll only be using that in bare-bottom tanks. The fry went nuts over it though!
I'll be shipping it out to the winners this week. Pam, I held yours so I'd be able to share some of my Uncle Rick's food with you. There's not a whole lot but I wanted you to try it in case you'd like to order later. Seemed silly to send you a box of food and not give you a chance to try the food of another sponsor too.::D: Can't wait for everyone to get it so I can hear your reviews!

I use DEP plaster of paris, and water to make a slurry, mix pure spirulina and Pro Gold Goldfish Pellets, Calcium Carbonate or Caltrate pills stick it the oven in silicone muffin mold and voila....Feeder blocks. I tried adding fresh veggies but didn't cook them for long enough and now my green bin stinks lol. You can also use a dehydrator but I don't have one....
Yet! Barb and I are still trying to convince our husbands that we need one!
I also ordered the pleco chews today and I can say Uncle Rick is a pleasure to deal with. Good quality food is one thing but good quality food and a friendly knowledgable vendor, always keep me coming back.

Newp I'm oogling mop.ca at the moment. The snails will have to deal with my oven baked cookies in the future. So far they go nuts for Melody's Bottom Bites are really enjoying Pam's Critter Crumbs as I type. Its kinda sad that even my snails get take out huh?

Mine are dehydrated. I keep my dehydrator in the garage so I don't get the smell like I did from the oven. You can dehydrate in the oven but it takes a long time, stinks to the high heavens and of course, this time of year you don't want the added heat. The electricity use would probably scare us all too. If you're baking as opposed to dehydrating in the oven, its not so bad.
You can usually get dehydrators practically brand new on the classifieds sites. People buy them for others or with good intentions for themselves, and then they don't use them. That's how I ended up with mine. Traded snails for it in fact.
I'll wait for a Pleco Chews review!

Aug 4th 2007, 02:12 AM
LOL You'd be surprised what people will trade for snails and fishy things. It was a good deal for him too, since the dehydrator was just sitting there. Its a nice one too - his Mother ordered it from a seed place.
Hey, try this one on hubby if he complains about how many snails you have, say "Melody traded snails for a dehydrator, so I'm saving up snails for a new car."

LOL Great minds & all that.
Now back to the food, since I've fed it for a few days now. All seems to be well, feces are nice & soft (the little gross things that makes a fish-keeper happy). The fish, snails and shrimp all eat it with enthusiasm.
My beef is the packaging - it didn't arrive resealed. I spoke to Rick about that before and he made a good point - fancy packaging puts the price up. I would prefer a vacuum seal on it though, for vitamin retention. Vitamins are already lost in repackaged food so that would minimize it. Its great stuff so I think we should take a collection up and buy Uncle Rick a machine for Christmas.
I think I will use it for garlic/vitamin soaks quite often. I hope to try the gel mix this weekend.

I'll be using a store credit to shop for food today, amongst other things. Food is very expensive when you have multiple tanks. I'm glad they're vegie lovers because that cuts way down on the cost, yet its good for them.

Aug 4th 2007, 02:24 PM
Good to read other's thoughts on Uncle Rick's food. I emailed him a couple of questions and he replied the same day. Now I just have to narrow down what food would be the best for my fish that isn't overlapping what I feed now (although his food is probably better than the LFS flake foods around here! lol)
Melody
Aug 4th 2007, 02:52 PM
I think any good quality food is sufficient, but his is priced better and he does fill some empty spaces in the overall selection. I'll always name Omega One and Dainichi among my top food choices, but I'm big on variety so there's lots of room for others.

Man! I Gotta Spend More Time Over Here.......you Folks Are Great!
When Feeding The "gel" To My Fish At 4 A.m. I Goofed And Instead Of Puting An 1/8-1/4 Inch Cube In The Community Tank They Got A Chunk Half The Size Of On Ice Cube!
Well 5 Days Later They Were Still Working On It!
No Foul Water, No Change In Ph (which The Plaster Things Will Do, Not To Mention How Constipating That Must Be. If They Ain't Poopen, They Ain't Happy!!!) So I "accedently" Found Out The "gel" Makes A Great Vacation Feeded, The Food Is Sealed In The Gel So It Can't Foul The Water.
Also Unlike Other "gel' Type Foods....i Don't Use Gelitan, Which Is Made From, The Nastiest Parts Of Cows!
Ok....packageing, The "better Than Brine" Originaly Was Shipped In Glass Spice/salt Shaker Jars And I Still Recomend This To Folks As An Easy Way To Feed. But It More Than Doubled The Shipping Costs, Plus The Costs Of The Shakers, Would Have Adder $5 To The Price! Hence The Low Tech Baggie Aproach. I Used To Put The Fancy Lables You See In The Auctions On The Jars, Than On The Bags, But I Was Going Through $60 Worth Of Ink Every Couple Of Weeks....so That Stoped As Well.
I Have Several Websites As Well As A Few Stores That Want My Products, But That Would Mean A Return To The Fancy Packageing As Well As A Higher Price, And That's Not What I'm About!
Highest Quality, Lowest Price, That's Me!now If I Could Just Find A Way To Get My Food To You Folks With Cheaper Shipping....i'd Be A Happy Man!!
Feel Free To Ask Me Anything About My Products, As You Can Tell I'm Very Passionate About My Foods!
All The Best........uncle

I haven't really had a chance to assess the other foods but as for the seaweed, not only do my snails and plecos love it but my adult mollies seem enjoy tearing bite-sized bits off. I think I'll try putting small flakes of it in the tank next feeding and see what the other fish think of it (when it's small enough for them to eat).

Kudos for the caution - too many foods come in with glorious hype and people seem almost brainwashed by it. There is so much more to a healthy fish than good colour or fast growth rates, both of which can easily be influenced by an unbalanced diet. In fact, if the only thing you changed in your fish's diet was the addition of Krill and/or Spirulina (depending on the colour of the fish & herbivore/carnivore status, among other things), you'd see colour improvement and faster growth, even if you were feeding them cornflakes otherwise.
The Plecos sure liked the seaweed too, just so you know... I'll have to get a pic of them with it. I like that there is a variety of types of seaweed and the price is much more easily digested than Julian Sprung's. I'll still use the latter as it comes in small flakes, but its nice to have an alternative for my bottom feeders.

A few days ago, I tried Uncle Rick's 'Attack' floating pellets. My fish checked them out, took a nibble but quickly gave up when they floated away. (I've never given them floating pellets before so this was a foreign concept.)
This morning I tried the pellets again. At first the same response, but then a couple of pellets lodged in the corner of the tank. This is what happened then:

My pleco chews from Uncle Rick just arrived.
Let me says a few things about Uncle Rick before I talk about my package.
The man doesn't know me from Adam and when I requested a shipping quote he asked me to hold off on payment so he could figured out the exact shipping and then he'd get back to me. He put my package in the mail before I paid him and then told me what I owed him. Who does that you ask? Trusting souls who are confident in their wares. Secondly he sent also sent me samples of Sea Veggies & Black Gold, we even chatted about the fish we keep via email a bit. He was an absolute pleasure to deal with. I'll snap some photos later around dinner time but within 5 minutes of putting the pleco chews into my 90 gallon 3 of my five were already perched on and in it happily munching. Because the logs have many holes and come in two different sizes I bet they'd also make a great hidey hole for fry. I'm going to wrap one in some java moss and see how it goes.
One of my baby brigs wasTRYING to crawl along it peacefully but my wee pleco's weren't very pleased with this developement and promptly booted my brig off, poor lil guy. I may have to add multiple chews to keep the peace. :)
Melody I also have you to thank for your input and tireless research into fish nutrition.
Thanks Uncle Rick! I'll be back!

Its been about three weeks now and everyone is doing well on the food. The snails, shrimp and fish all appreciate the various kinds. They're digesting it well too.
The fry are growing well on the Better Than Brine, which I decided to feed as an exclusive seafood protein in one tank to observe the growth. They still get their vegies from other sources because I don't like raising vegie-lovers on 'meaty' foods alone.
I wouldn't exactly call it a controlled experiment...lol...but all is well thus far. It still bugs me that the food isn't immediatly resealed as I can't be sure how much vitamin content is lost, but apparently there's enough left in there for them to do well on. Since I feed a varied diet in all of the other tanks, its not a big concern.

I Think You're Missing 2 Of The Key Features
First Is Micro~encapsulation.....think M&m's
Even The Smallest Size Of "better Than Brine" Has A Protein Coating
So It Will Only Desolve In The Fish....not Your Tank That's Why It Can't Foul Water And Has A 3 Year Shelf Life Even If You Can't Vacuum Seal It Every Time.
Lots Of Folks Just Use An Old Salt Or Spice Shaker
Second Altho High In Protien, Much Of The Protein Contant Comes From
"yellow" Algae So There Is A Very High Vegitable Content.
Also High Hufa, Lipids And Omega Acids.
It Was Designed To Be The Perfect Food For All Things Aquatic!
I've Raised Several Tanks Of Mbuns With Just My Foods And All Are Doing Great!

I can vouch for that. Just got my 1 lb. bag of food yesterday and even my cranky/finicky swordtails went nuts over it, pure spirulina they spit out in complete disgust but the attack pellets. Well lets just say the name speaks for itself.

Nope, I got those features....lol....I'm talking about all of the food and only the Better Than Brine is encapsulated. I don't believe that any one food is best for all creatures personally. They can do ok on a good community food, but they all have needs that can be better met with a specialized diet.
And no arguements Mister - this is a review thread, not a sales thread. The sales threads are in the merchant area. :;): Thanks!
