Hey, one of my show platies i got recently showed up to feeding time with a fluffy growth on her mouth. It was disgusting, she didn't appear sick in any other way (no clamped fins, still had a voracious appetite etc) i immediately moved her into the empty waiting for a goldfish tank, did i 50% wc to get the temp back up while i was waiting for the heater to kick in and started treating with maracide, after about 3 days a big bubble formed, the bubble is pretty much gone and she's looking so much better, still some fuzz but i'm just going to continue treating. I also added salt to the water and turned the heat up, it's at about 84.
Anything else you guys can think of?
I don't know what's up with these guys, my black velvet female disappeared as well, i assume she died and the snails took care of her. she was there and then she was gone - very strange.

Were they exposed to other fish? Quite often store fish are carriers - they've built an immunity of sorts or are still pumped full of antibiotics, so they aren't sick but they can pass illness on to others.

I've lost maybe three out of that huge shipment and none of them looked sick so I assume it was shipping stress. All of the fish I have left from that shipment look great so I can guarantee you that there is nothing up with those fish... other than the fact that they've been responsibly bred and cared for so they aren't prepared for an attack of various bugs that come from some stores that will go unnamed.

As for the Platy specifically, if she showed no signs of illness it was probably an injury that fungused.

Hope she fully recovers!

all the fish in the tank have been there for several months now, hmmm...i don't remember when the last time i added pet store fish....it's been a long time, and they were all quarantined for over a month if not several months. All the rest of the fish from that shipment are fantastic, healthy, gorgeous, except one male and one female Picta Red's who disappeared. I dunno what's up with those 2 females, marble and black velvet...i'm not sure. Like you said, could have been an injury - i haven't noticed too much pestering, but i could have just missed it and the black velvet died from stress.
Anyway - i'm sure it's nothing to do with that shipment of fish - just luck of the draw.
Very disappointing but it happens. My marble is doing well now - it sucks about my black velvet, i really enjoyed that pair.

Ah, I thought your picture post said you added Platy's a few weeks ago but I must have read it wrong... it was definitly after you got the fish from me anyway. Regardless, they've been in my tanks for a couple of months without issues so I agree, its not the fish. Certainly Charles has the rep and countless show ribbons to prove the exceptional quality of his fish. Maybe you have something lingering there from the other problems you had.

The Pictas are a delicate fish - even master breeders have lost entire populations. I sold mine off to a neighbour so I'll ask how they're doing the next time I see him.

Hopefully things settle down for you soon!

It does sound like fungus on an injury site. Glad to hear she is looking better... and yes, I think you're right to continue treatment. Good luck. Hope she gets better soon.

well she really looked like she was improving but i came home from work today to find a dead platy
I did my best but it didn't work.
Well i guess back to my original plan - i'm going to completely clean out the tank - get rid of the gravel - sterilize and get a goldfish.

I'm sorry to hear about your platy...Just be careful as far as goldies go, they are notorious for carrying disease from the lfs. I usually pick up a pack of Jungle's Parasite Clear as a blanket treatment since it has no ill effects on the fish or the bacteria.
