A big breeder of plecos uses these. Walmart is the cheapest I have found. I tried the 4" inch in diameter. No glaze. Mine don't use mine, but he swears by them.
Take a clay saucer:

Then cut a hole in the other:

Then silcone together.
I also siliconed some silk plant leaves to the top.
I have also used an unside down clay pot hole cut in it and siliconed to the saucer. And then Silicone leaves all over it.

does a BN cave need to have a "letterbox" entrance ? I was thinking of using pvc pipe cuttings but it might b e a bit "exposed".... ideas ?

Letterbox? As in rectangle door? No it can be round or half cirlce. It is supposed to be the width of your pleco plus one fin. I have cut pvc in half I think it is 1.5 or 2 inch in diameter and siliconed it to something and closed the one end.

I haven't made one of PVC only ones similar to the ones Pam has here but with a semi-circular hole and coverered them in gravel. Here's a PVC one: DIY Cave (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=389) but it leaves the end of one part open. As Pam said, it'd need to be closed off at one end (papa has to be able to keep the fry from escaping while they mature).

I tried a reptile cave with 1 pair with no luck. So I tried another pair with it and success except...... they spawned behind the slate against the back.

My silver tip male hasn't left the cave Jay made since it was introduced to the tank. It's like he's disappeared. The female goes in quite often too, something I never saw her do with the previous cave.
